I heard rampart range is re-opening this year, but my google searches have given me no success. It appears as of now it is still closed indefinately? I'm thinking pike national forest is just as good as any place to shoot, but a range is always preferred.
Also, reading the initial reports from the unfortunate death at the range made it sound to me like it could have been murder. Does anyone have any details that firmly place this in the realm of "accidental death" or manslaughter or whatever that may be called? I've never pointed a rifle square at someone's chest- sounds a little fishy to me. |

It was pointed at their chest during a target change, I believe...more than likely it was just some idiot playing around with the gun while his buddy was downrange and stupid shit happened... Word is the range will be reopened once they can find a way to have a range officer on sight at all times... You need to get your membership back...I miss your helmet cat |

It was a handgun, not a rifle. I've been swept many times before by discipline-challenged shooters who seem to think you have to turn the pistol sideways and angle it in order to effect a mag change.
I'd imagine the scenario thus: Negligent shooter points handgun to the left and rotates it almost horizontal as he watches himself insert the fresh magazine, incidentally pointing it square at the chest of his buddy standing next to him. Presses the slide release (possibly with his negligent finger still on the trigger)... BANG! ohcrapIshotmybuddythegunmustbebrokenitjustwentoff |

I know of no such pawnee shoot! I would totally be there if I wasn't busy with a bunch of other stuff. We just moved in to our new house last weekend and we have a pile of stuff to do around the house. :(
But in any case, I'm not trying to start a witch hunt about the rampart range shooting, it just always struck me as odd. I wonder if I can get my hands on the official police report.... actually, I might be able to. I'm assuming the El Paso county Sheriffs were the ones to handle the case, or was it forest rangers since it was in national forest? Stay tuned folks! |
| Hey, sorry to resurrect this thread, but I figured it would be better than starting a new one. We are planning on shooting this weekend in Pike Nat. Forest near Rampart, does anyone have any tips for where to go or what the roads are like, or the best way to get there? Anything would be a help, thanks. |

i see this thread got a little off topic but if anyone cares i have the real story - I was there
Otis, the man who was killed was sitting at one of the benches, right elbow on the bench shooting a marlin 60. his soon-to-be brother-in-law was standing at otis' 10o'clock and was trying to clear a jam in his S&W M&P 9mm. he couldnt get it and he walked around behind otis to his 3o'clock. holding the M&P horizontally down the range line and directly pointed at otis' exposed armpit, the gun went off. 9mm FMJ through and through both armpits (and lungs) I was 2 stations to their right - opposite direction of the bullet. long story short, i called 911, had to fuck around getting transfered from CSPD to el paso sheriffs, lost the call due to shitty reception, called back, transferred again, told the dispatcher in some very colorful language that if the bird wasnt off the ground in 1 mike then he was dead. needless to say, otis died in my lap while i was performing CPR. i had to perform CPR for 45 mins, he died about 5-8 minutes in. H+45, 2 el paso sheriffs roll up the hill, H+50 9 news shows up, H+60+/- the flight for life showed up. H+3hours, el paso county coroner and detectives show up definitely not murder. no if ands or buts otis was supposed to marry the other guy's sister in 2 weeks. she was pregnant. although my training didnt save his life, it gave me the confidence to act and to direct people into action. Otis Freison RIP |
