| who here lives in Colorado Springs? what kind of gun laws does colorado have? I'm toying with the idea of filling out an application with the Colorado Springs Police Department. I currently live in Texas but love Colorado. You guys ever get together for shoots? |
|
I live in the Springs.
Colorado supposedly has the third best gun laws in the country, after Alaska and Vermont. We have open carry here, and the county sheriff is shall issue-friendly, so I've heard. I dunno, DO arfcommers from the Springs ever get together? Might be an interesting experience. You'd prolly have a hard time getting everyone to agree on a place to meet. My vote would be for Dragonman's, I refuse to shoot at Rampart Range. |

Not necessarily because he/she wants to be. The state has a 'Shall Issue' law. Read about it HERE.

There is a group of shooters that get together down here every other month. You can get more details at http://www.co-ar15.com/forums/index.php
Colorado Springs, El Paso County and Colorado in general is pretty gun friendly. The current Springs Police Chief is a tool. In way over his head. |

Another Colorado Springs member here. I'm Air Force. There are 5 military bases in the Springs, not sure of total military, but a butt load. It's cool here, lots of places to shoot (1 indoor, 3 or 4 outdoor ranges, and lots of 'authorized' places within an hour into the mountains.
I am not an expert on the current LEO situation, but I have read that Colorado Springs and El Paso Sheriff departments have/are laying a number of folks off due to money issues.. Read through the local paper (www.gazette.com) for more information about that issue.. Thank you, ~DoubleAD~ |

Don't plan on a cop job anywhere in El Paso County for a while. Both El Paso County and CSPD are in a hiring freeze and will be cutting positions. Rumor has it they will cut 135 jobs at CSPD and who knows how many at EPSD. Read that to mean a lot.
Also remember to be a sworn officer in Colorado you must be POST certified. CSPD and EPSD will send you to an academy, but if you want to look for work with smaller agencies you may need to be certified before they'll take your application. Same applies for reserve officers. Otherwise we springers are a nice group. The sheriff is gun friendly and will sign off on most anything. And as stated, the group on the Colorado site get together a lot and shoot. Its a good way to meet people. |
| CSPD is not looking to lay off any officers off but EPSO is. CSPD has made two recruit classes in 2009 a priority to get manpower up to authorized strength. Check out www.springspolice.com and go to the employment link. CSPD also offers a lateral academy which keeps experienced officers from having to go through the entire recruit academy. |

http://www.ago.state.co.us/post_board.cfmMenuPage=True.html Police Officers Standars and Training many states and their police departments around the country have gone to or are going to some form of POST certification. it standardizes procedures, training, and for liability sake. |

I live in the Springs. Email or PM me, I can give you some more info on POST and how to get it, if you want.
Everyone is correct; El Paso County is gun-friendly, and Colorado is in fact a shall-issue state. What not many know is that the state CCW laws were actually modeled after El Paso County's, enacted by Sheriff John Anderson and carried on by present-Sheriff Terry Maketa. CSPD is not at this time laying anyone off nor in a hiring freeze that I am aware of., but El Paso County is doing both. Sheriff Maketa's a great guy...I know, I work for him! |

FWIW, I will never go back to the Dragon Man's range to shoot. IMHO the range isn't that great (although it's less than 20 mins from my house) and it's too expensive. Why pay to shoot when there are so many places to go for free??? Just my $.02 worth... |
| There are a lot of things that Denver tries to do that are unconstitutional. Denver is home rule, so they think they can get away with anything. Open carry is not permitted in the city of Denver and to the best of my knowledge nobody has challenged that yet. Denver would be a nice place if it weren't for the Prius driving, Obama supporting crowd. |

The same enabling law which made for statewide shall-issue CCW gave local jurisdictions the right to regulate open carry. Denver and the hippies in Manitou Springs are at least two of the jurisdictions which chose to forbid open carry once they were given that option. Might be more. |
| I do recall a Manitou Springs city council member carrying a shotgun to a council meeting within the last few years. I believe he said he wanted to test the waters on the open carry laws. From what I remember, it wasn't received very well by his fellow politicos! |

He'd sit quietly at each meeting, with the shotgun across his knee. |

I'm in COS also...
Was looking to buy a place out on Yoder, but due to yesterdays layoff, that won't be happening. I have not been out shooting in years it seems... I've been working non stop 50-60hr weeks for nearly the last 5 years. Now I will take some time to warm up some of my shootin iron. Colorado Springs is a good place for stamp collectors... |

I'm coming to Colorado Springs next month. Wife will be following in May. Would appriciate any help with suggestions on nice places to live withing a 25 min drive of Ft. Carson that offer reasonable rent and places to shoot nearby. Also, where can I find a map of "authorized" places to shoot. I would love to run my Sako TRG out past 1K yds if I could find enough open land. Thanks and sorry for the hijack!

CMS ( Army butterbar) I live in a neghborhood that is about 15 mins NE from gate 20 at Ft Carson. There are several homes in our neghborhood for rent. Most of the homes are in the 2,000 sq ft range, most have basements, and all have fenced back yards and two car garages. Most of the homes are less than 15 years old. PM me if you want more details. Also, Royal Gorge has lanes out to 1,300 yards, but I wouldn't call it "close" to Ft Carson. It's about a 45 min drive to get there (30 miles S on Hwy 115 and 10 miles W on Hwy 50), but to me, that's not really that close. YMMV. Royal Gorge Gun Club |

There's the Frontier Sportsman's club, they have a long range out by Hanover, east of Fountain, not sure how long it is, though. Last I heard there's a waiting list to join. Don't some long range shooters go out by Wild Horse somewhere?
The NRA Whittington Center, near Raton, NM, is a mecca for shooters. It's about 2 1/2-3 hrs from the Springs. |

Wow, I thought it was supposed to be long range, like a thousand. What happened? |

A slow moving rectal-cranial inversion rolled into town. The board knows whats best. They welcome input as long as you pat them on the back and say good job. I poked my head in the initial design concept 8-10 years ago. The few that run the club didnt want to hear it then either. I tried to share plans of other ranges such as PASA Park, Reno, Lincoln, ect and I was the planner for much of the 1999-2002 range additions at Pueblo West, so I know of what I speak. They could have built a world class range with a dozen plus handgun berms and rifle berms from 100-1,000. Now they have three rifle berms at 100, 200 and 300. And for some stupid idea they have three 200 yard wide pistol berms when they could have had 8-10 forty yard wide pistol ranges. |
