Reading a book about Coyotes and wondering about using the right call at the right time of year. Do any of you Washington Coyote hunters change up your calls during the mating season? Do challenge calls work better in specific areas? I keep reading that rabbit calls work best, but is that everywhere? would challenges increase the chance of success? This will be my first time out when I get home in Jan and it would be nice to not be out there with the wrong call. I am looking at Wenatchee, Darrington and some places off of HW2. I plan on a few days scouting and calling to see what happens.
Any suggestions on affordable calls would be welcome Thanks in Advance |

I use rabbit calls most of the time but have used a blade of grass to make a reed between my fingers too.
And keep your eyes and ears open all the time when calling as you may bring in small and large cats for dinner too. Just wait till you get that strange feeling that something is watching you when calling and you spot a cougar at about 50 yards away
staring you down. |

staring you down. I would love to see a cougar, I always find their tracks when I go snow shoeing. The last time I saw some around my old tracks on the way down, have never actually seen one though. I read also that the presence of a big cat will keep the yotes away? is that true? |
| I think in Bellevue-Kirkland they're attracted to the sound of cat collars. Once the weather got cold, you could hear the coyotes at night - I've seen them walking down the middle of the road like they don't have a care in the world. It's probably a coincidence that a bunch of "missing cat" posters went up at the same time. |
