FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE July 3, 2013 EAST LEWIS COUNTY WILDLAND FIRE INVESTIGATION CONCLUDED Cause Was Exploding Target OLYMPIA – The Washington State Department of Natural Resources (DNR) has released an investigation report for the Dog Mountain Fire that started in May of this year. The report concluded that the cause of the fire was a commercially made or homemade exploding target. At this time, there are no suspects. The fire started the afternoon of May 4. After 100 firefighters and 2 helicopters fought the blaze, it was contained to approximately 200 acres. According to the Washington Administrative Code (WAC) 332-52-145, exploding targets are illegal on DNR-managed lands. DNR wants to encourage you to be fire safe this summer. The hot temperatures will rapidly dry out the landscape. DNR’s Wildfire Mission Administered by Commissioner of Public Lands Peter Goldmark, DNR is responsible for preventing and fighting wildfires on 13 million acres of private, state and tribal-owned forestlands. DNR is the state’s largest on-call fire department, with more than 1,000 employees trained and available to be dispatched to fires as needed. During fire season, this includes more than 700 DNR employees who have other permanent jobs with the agency and about 400 seasonal employees hired for firefighting duties. Additionally, adult offenders from the Department of Corrections and juvenile offenders from the Department of Social and Health Services-Juvenile Rehabilitation Administration support firefighting efforts through DNR’s Correctional Camps Program. DNR also participates in Washington's coordinated interagency approach to firefighting.
