I recently switched to the disposable razors for the same reason. I may have one of those double-sided blade holders around here somewhere. |

I don't know but maybe Dino will kick your ass... |

Yup, those inexpensive razors go a long way. I use a Mach 2 and still have a box of the bulk blades from Costco. I simply use Dove handsoap as shaving lather, with soap the blades lasts for at least a month or two (I honestly don't remember). I think I'm set for at least 2 years |

Friend of mine recently switched to one of those fancy straight razors. He's been having trouble keeping it sharp, last report was that he was using an emry board on it. I use the Mach3 with bulk packs of blades from Costco. A blade easily lasts me a month, although near the end it isn't working so great. |

That is an amazing way to mess up a straight razor. Tell your friend to get a strop and start swiping. The spine of the blade needs to be on the belt as well as the blade. What he has done is messed up the angle of the bevel. If you strop daily it will almost never need to be "sharpened" The strop does that until you bow out the blade with bad technique. |

Quoted: He claims to have tried the strop first, both leather and something else that I forget. It wouldn't hold its edge with either apparently. Arfcom to the rescue:
ARCHIVED THREAD-Shaving with old-style double edged safety razors - save money! (part II) ARCHIVED THREAD-Straight Razor vs Disposable Razor Regarding the friend with straight razor problems- sounds like it needs to be re-sharpened. There are people who can do this. A recommended stone to use for straight razors is from Ardennes coticule- Belgian whetstone, if he wants to try himself. When wetted with water, these stones produce a "milk" of garnet crystals. A decent sized stone from them costs ~$70-100. Then needs to strop the blade, with the correct pastes and technique. Badger & Blade is a good discussion forum- kind of an Arfcom for shaving. Ardennes coticule Presently using, from West Coast shaving: Merkur 23C Long Handle safety razor. Taylor of Old Bond Street shaving cream (almond)- one bowl lasts me about a year. Badger brush or boar brush. Boar is reasonable to start with- less expensive than Badger. Badger brushes are great, though. Feather Hi-Stainless Blades- Japanese blade- wicked sharp. Best prices I've found for Feathers are at Double Edge Shaving Place-Dr. Idiot's store. IIRC, it's an eBay store- ships from Singapore- takes about 10-14 days to get here via mail, delivery signature required. There are several other good brands of blades, ie, Gillette 7-O'clock SharpEdge (Yellow label; made in Russia), Astra Superior Platinum Double Edge (Russia), Personna Red (Israel), Derby Extra, etc. It's worthwhile to get several brands and see which ones you like. The Merkur razors are very good, but I have read that Merkur blades are not so good. Very enjoyable way of shaving, IMO. |

I picked up another yesterday morning for $3.00
It was just nasty looking, but when I finished hitting it with Writes Brass Polish, it ended up being a 30's Gillette two tone Brass, and Copper. Looks pretty nice. Looks just like this one http://auburn-newyork.olx.com/1930-vintage-gillette-ball-end-safety-razor-new-style-iid-108256053 |
