Would anyone be willing to lend me use of some go/no-go headspace gauges, throat erosion and muzzle gauge to check this Garand I picked up?
I just want to make sure its not going to kill or maim me when I try to shoot it. Id post more info about the gun but I don't feel like fielding any inevitable lecturing from any USGI purists that may be out there. Thanks. |
|
Well, whatever. I'm going to get some shit but oh well. Its a Century garand built with what seems to be varying USGI parts on a Century receiver. So its a century garand. However, it is a very nice one. I know Century doesn't have a great reputation but this one is in otherwise damn near perfect shape. I just need to check the headspacing and bore to see if its still got life and how much.
I know CMP is the way to go and I will do so in the future but I just wanted a garand to shoot and not so much a piece of WW2 memorabilia at this point. |

How much are you paying? Less than 550 ETA: I'm not looking for a debate on justification. Just someone who might be willing to loan me some gauges for a day or so. At the minimum I want to check the head spacing. I would be willing to cover any delivery/return charges and perhaps a "rental" fee of sorts. I just don't want to blow more money on gauges I really only need about 5 minutes of use from. |
|
i have the go /nogo, and feild gauges. If you can swing by 512 and Canyon rd. we can drop them in and see if what you got.
If you want just call me and see if or when I'm out that way. http://www.bobspropertysolutions.com/ |

As I said above my next Garand will be from the CMP. I don't know how many times I filled out the paperwork but never got the notarization done and forgot about it.
However, based on the photos on the CMP site this Century looks to be along the quality of the correct grade M1's but alas it is still a century. As long as it works it will, for the time being, satisfy the void in my life of never having fired a Garand. |
|
Look at the heel on this Century one...

It's simple.
Follow this flow chart - 1. You're a man - Yes / No / Unsure. If yes then skip to 2. If no then skip to 3. If unsure - Reach down into your pants and find your balls. Did you find them? Yes / No 2. Yes - Man up and buy the tools you need to fix / inspect your rifle. 3. No - Put on your apron and bake some banana nut bread and forget about some silly rifle. |

And I'll add that shooting a Century Garand, is not shooting a real Garand. But then, you may be used to fugly half-cousins twice removed. |

what is even more funny is he is going to spend TE gauge 75.00 Muzzle gauge 35.00 Head Space gauges 90.00 200.00 bucks to see if his centurey is gtg. Now if he spent 300.00 for said rifle that's 500.00 bucks... The CMP looks better and better.... Of course he will have the tools

Care to show me where on the CMP website that says each and every firearm they ship is guaranteed to be safe to fire?? I'm pretty sure they say that as a surplus rifle, use at your own risk. Regardless of the grade. |
|
Quoted: Care to show me where on the CMP website that says each and every firearm they ship is guaranteed to be safe to fire?? Each M1 Garand rifle sold by CMP is an authentic U.S. Government rifle that has been inspected, headspaced, repaired if necessary and test fired for function. Each rifle is shipped with safety manual, one eight-round clip and chamber safety flag. Orders are filled on a first-come first serve basis. Rifles of all grades are packed for shipment purely by "luck of the draw". Prices are subject to change. If price has changed after an order has been received, customers will be notified before new prices are charged. Shipping and Handling is $22.95 per rifle. |

FUTHERMORE... for those slow...
FIELD GRADE: (Fair to Good) Field Grade Rifles. Most of these rifles have been refinished or rebuilt at least once while in military service and will likely have some parts from other manufacturers. Fair to good condition. Rifle wear will be exhibited by worn and mixed colors of the finish; there may be some minor pitting on the metal parts; wood will be basically sound but may be well used with minor hairline cracks, and many dings, scratches and gouges; wood may not match in color, type of wood or condition. These rifles may have some foreign parts and wood may be Walnut, Birch, Beech or other variety. Rifles do not have import marks. Bores will be generally good with only minor imperfections; the barrel crown may be nicked, and the muzzle may gauge more than “3” on muzzle gauge. The Throat Erosion will gauge less than 5 – well within US Army standards. Do not expect rifles in mint condition in this grade. SERVICE GRADE: (Good to Very Good) Service Grade Rifles show less wear and better appearance than Field or Rack Grades. Good to very good condition. Rifle wear will be exhibited by worn and mixed colors of the parkerized finish. There may be some minor pitting on the metal parts. Wood will be either Walnut, Birch, Beech or other variety and will be basically sound but may have minor hairline cracks, dings, scratches and gouges. Wood may not match in color or type of wood. Wood may be of new production on Service Grade Garands. Bores will be generally good with only minor imperfections. The barrel crown may be nicked, but the muzzle will gauge "3 or less" and the throat erosion will gauge less than 5 |

Armalite (Costa Mesa) made the AR-15. That cannot be, because an armalite does not say AR-15. If it doesn't say it on the gun it cannot be the real thing. Thems the rules in this thread my friend.
By the same rules, the only real AR-15 is a Colt. Just like my Century M1 is all USGI except the receiver and therefore cannot be a "real" garand.

Still see no guarantee in there. Its ok, all you fools can be haters all you want. Anytime I have EVER heard of any problem with a firearm from the CMP they where all over it like stink on shit. They have the best costumer service bar non. They will even pay to have it shipped back if there is a problem... You still havn't said how much you have paid or a list of parts or pictures... What gives? |

What gives? As I said I no longer have a functioning camera. parts list, maybe tomorrow on my day off. And if you are very lucky, I might find a camera to borrow. Why you so interested in seeing a fake garand anyway? |

You're at the bottom of the hole now, you can put down the shovel.

And Century has a guarantee? A Centruy Garand will never be a true Garand, just like a Universal M1 is not a true M1 Carbine. It's either the real thing or it's not. If you set your sights low enough, you'll always be satisfied. |

Look, you guys have taken this thread and blown it way out of proportion. Which is fine because thats what you do. I never said I was an expert on anything, And my OP said I realized I was gonna take shit for getting a non USGI garand. But so far ive heard nothing but CMP garands are the shit, which I never argued against and I would agree. But just because a garand receiver doesn't say springfield, or WRA, etc etc doesn't mean it isn't going to be a perfectly functional shooter. Does anyone have anything contructive to add such as real first hand experience with century's and not "my friend bubba says them things are shit" or "i saw this thing on fulton-armory once" or "anything that isnt CMP is shit" ? Tweak, if you are disappointed in my knowledge. sorry, I've never claimed to be an expert. Unlike some of you. |
