McChord Airshow

I'm going Sat

7/16/2010 10:57:30 AM EDT
[#1]
Saw some practice runs yesterday while in Lakewood. Pretty cool stuff.
7/16/2010 12:09:58 PM EDT
[#2]
See calendar above.

The airshow conflicts with RRR, but KTCM is much closer to my AOR as I'm on-call for work.
7/16/2010 12:31:50 PM EDT
[#3]
I would love to get over there for that one.

But I'll have to settle for the Spokane air show  Skyfest 2010
7/16/2010 1:29:46 PM EDT
[#4]
I was wondering why I was getting those stupid low altitude flybys of my apartment for the past few days.
7/16/2010 2:38:56 PM EDT
[#5]
Should be there Saturday also, our warehouse location is right under the flight path and watching the F4 Phantom fly over made me really wish they had something more "current" flying overhead
7/16/2010 2:49:46 PM EDT
[#6]
Will be there Saturday with the family in tow.

7/16/2010 3:31:21 PM EDT

I'm in!

An F-22 demo would be cool but on the other hand the Phantom is timeless and has actually killed some bad guys...
7/16/2010 7:28:00 PM EDT
[#8]
I saw the Blue Angles doing loops over I-5 this afternoon.
7/16/2010 7:36:00 PM EDT
[#9]
Pistol match on Saturday so we're going on Sunday.

Going to miss the B2.  Again.

I meant something that I wouldn't be concerned about the maintenance schedule upkeep on
7/16/2010 8:16:58 PM EDT
[#11]
Saw two F-22's in the pattern this evening.  Don't know if they'll be flying for the show but they're there now.

If you get a chance to see a F-22, take it.  You may think it's just another fighter, but it's simply unreal what this thing can do in the hands of a skilled pilot.  Seriously, when I say unreal, I mean it doesn't even look real.  I was actually more impressed with the F-22 flying solo than the the whole Blue Angles show, and the blue angles are amazing.  I'm a big aircraft nut, and I absolutely love the WWII, Korean War, and Vietnam War era aircraft, but I was left speechless watching this thing being put through the paces.

As far as the F-22's, definately, they are unreal, flying at night, they seriously do not look like any other "human" aircraft. but as far as airshows go, I have been living in one for the past month and a half, I'm ready to go home and sleep in a room with out 80 other guys, and taking showers all by my self, not hearing 5 other guys singing the song "My Girl" in the shower. I am ready to eat food that is safe for human consumption, and I am definately ready to drive the deuce again.

Wow, this kinda turned into a hijack/rant. Back to the topic at hand, I would definately watch the F-22's over the blue angels any day.

We tried, and decided our time was better spent actually doing something instead of sitting in traffic for a couple of hours. Went to Pt. defiance and saaw the Fort and the logging museum instead (The Zoo was, well, a zoo, with no parking).

Yes indeed, it was insane.

Yeah, saw some cool stuff flyin' overhead from the Parkland/Lakewood area.  F-4's, what appeared to be T-37's and an F-86, F-16's, etc.  Looked like maybe an A-6 too, or variant thereof.

Did see a F-4, F-16, something else, and an A-10 flyin' in formation!  That was a trip.
7/17/2010 5:29:30 PM EDT
[#24]
I attended inadvertently, my son was playing in a baseball tournament on a field off of Steele street and the field was in the flight path.

It was really hard for the boys to concentrate when the B-2 and other aircraft were flying low level right over the field.

ETA: I missed a lot of action on the field, it was awesome!

Lots of vapor coming from the wings and wing tips!

What traffic?

I guess it helped getting on base at around 0845, parking over by the BX and sticking around until 1730.

I was told getting on base at 1030 was "a cast iron pain in the ass."

F-22's from Tyndall AFB. One of them was actually looking kind of rough. The paint was peeling from the nose.

Funny how things change. During the last airshow two years ago they had SP's with M-4's standing guard between us yokles and the F-22's but this time the crowd control fence was apparently good enough.

F-15E.

T-38.

We took note that the T-38 has apparently been receiving regular avionics upgrades. They velcroed a handheld GPS to one of the instrument panels.

Top Gun F-5. The Naval Fighter Weapons School actually sent one of their Super Hornets and an F-16 too.

I'd never seen an F/A-18 with the conspicuous giant light mounted forward of the cockpit. We asked the pilot about it (who was conspicuously not Canadian by the way, he was actually a USAF exchange pilot) and it turns out that when the Canadians intercept Russian aircraft coming over the pole they like to document the incidents and when they happen at night this is how they light 'em up.

Combat controllers practicing for the show open.

The show open was a mock assault on the airfield.

A-10's on a strafing run.

More combat controllers.

Rangers taking down the airfield.

Those new parachutes I recognize from one of KA3B's GD posts about such things.

AH-1 Cobra rolling in to suppress enemy forces.

C-17 assault force returning to base.

A-10.

Grumman Bearcat.

Hungry C-5.

Polish Migs.

In a dogfight versus an FJ Fury.

Fury and Mig.

Three ship.

Super Hornet demo.

More Super Hornet.

Over the top.

Fury and Hornet heritage flight.

F-16 Demo.

They always pick the wrong music for these demos.

Everyone knows it should be Queen's One Vision.

Jet car.

T-33 Ace Maker though the history they gave over the PA system it should be called the death trap.

It's been 15 years since I've seen a B-2 in person.

On his last pass it lined up perfectly.

QF-4

A-10 again.

Another heritage flight.

This guy put on a great show in the F-86 and when they read off his flight experience it's absolutely no wonder.

Did you get any of the yellow Canadair CL-13 Sabre Mk6?

That was being flown by Maj.Gen. George "Frank" Scoggins, WA ANG (ret.).  He used to be an F-16 driver, amongst other things.

My pictures were OK, not too great.  I guess I need to sell a kidney and perhaps a lung to get a decent lens.  Most of my work was with a Canon EF 75-300 1:4-5.6 lens on my EOS Rebel XSi.

I also fucked up and didn't take any in RAW format.

Your pictures, as usual, kick some serious ass.

Went today, traffic was not that bad. Not too bad of a show considering that there was no big name Demo Team. That green F86 was kick ass as was the F4. Plus anything with afterburner is always worth seeing. Well except that jet car. Got to finger a real M4 with the happy switch too.

I came off without a telephoto of any kind,

, but I did  get my Sights on PCR Double Naught wearin' an Irish Militia Insignia

, but then somebody flew a jet over and wrecked my aim.

The thing I like most about these,  is that kids from 4 to 84 can get in the Hummer, and fondle Ma Deuce

There is something really wrong  with the  C-17 hanger.

Every Airshow, I go in there and try to meet of one of those old guys,
, there aren't as many of them , year by year

, and just tell him "Thanks for what you did".

There is something wrong with that hanger,   some kind of dust or eye irritant

, because when I'm walking away , my eyes start to leak.

, seems to be pretty common condition
