I posted the fallowing on an IDPA board and thought some of the locals in here may enjoy seeing what my thoughts were. I hope to see a few of you at the next match.

Well, first day of IDPA went well. Ended up using an IWB holster and a borrowed mag pouch. I need to get my own so that I can practice my drawing and reloading as part of my dry fire practice. If I knew IWB was allowed, I could have used my own holster.

The day was really fun. There were many people, ended up with 12 people per squad, but I was able to learn from those in my group. Many had taken much more formal training than myself and I think there was even on sponsored shooter in the group. All were looking at my form and helping me find areas to improve. The hardest stage was on where we were shooting 26 yards from behind cover. Never done anything like that before with a pistol.

I also learned about my equipment. I was shooting a G19 that I have carried for a few years. In all the practice and range work I have done I had never had the slide close forward on me when inserting a new mag. It happened on one of the stages and I had to think where next to go. I also found hitting the mag release under stress and in the wet to be more challenging. Need to work with the pistol a bit more before I decide if it is an ergo issue with the gun or a training issue with me. Maybe both.

I was able to get some videos taken with my camera. If anyone wants to see how a novice takes on IDPA, I uploaded them to youtube.

That's awesome brother, glad you were able to get up there and do that.  I've gotta do this too one o' these days.

You've never had your G19 "auto-chamber" like that on a reload, eh?  Mine do it off and on...........love it when it happens.  Not a bad thing at all.

For the issue with hitting the release under stress/when wet/wearing gloves, etc. etc., either go with the "overhand" method that I use, or go with an extended release.

For mag pouches, a couple of the Blade-Tech single pouches would work great.  I use one, w/ the Tek-Lok attachment.  Bought it at the Marksman a couple o' years ago.  Great stuff.

I think most would agree, and you probably already know this, but the best way to get true training value out of the experience is to use guns and gear you'd normally carry with (which you were already doin' with the G19).  Some folks like to "game" just to win and be on top.  Fine for them, but...........you know...............

Thanks for postin' the vid, very cool.

When's the next match?

It was rainy. As they day went on, I noticed it getting colder. I think I was just getting wetter. It was humbling.

Vini, next match at the Marksman is second Sat in Jan, third Sat back out in Renton.

I know what you mean about gear and game. I may change my carry because of the game.
