Does anybody know of a good defence course on the dry side? I usually try to take one class every year to keep the skills up but have slacked when i moved back to Spokane. Does anyone know of a decent course over here?
ETA: im looking for handgun oriented classes, things that deal not just with shooting but with disarming and retention.

I've never run across a firearms training school (for civvies at least) that had disarm techniques as part of the curriculum.  Retention techniques, yes, disarm, no.

Usually the case is that you find good shooting training, and then find a good unarmed combat training (Karate, etc) elsewhere that actually teaches that sort of thing.  This can prove problomatic as many martial arts dojo's don't want to go sidstep into the gun world, so you'll probably strike out a few times while looking for a dojo that does.  Your best luck will be finding a dojo that's run by a cop in their off time or by a former cop.

yeah the only disarming training i ever got was actually from guys i knew that were SF just hanging out in the barracks. i really think that should be part of handgun classes, if you know how to disarm someone i think youll be better prepared to retain your weapon...

I think Insights may have a class that covers that.

Also, Aikido Eastside offers a defensive tactics class which I took for several years.  He touched on weapons disarming.  The instructor taught defensive tactics at bellevue community college.  I believe he is highly qualified, and at the least very entertaining.

Oh, just realized after I typed this that you meant eastern washington... sorry, not helpful.

At Center Target in Post Falls they teach ninja skills.  Either that or the walk through Felony Flats every 90 days until you can do it without getting stiches.

How determined are you?

...would you consider traveling a bit for the training?

As far as I know, there aren't any schools that do that type of training anymore in this state.

If you are serious and aren't afraid to get bruised-up a bit......PM me.

There is Insights over on the west side which, in my opinion is worth going over for.  They offer a much more in depth curriculum.

Sharpshooting offers courses in marksmanship, personal protection, and hand to hand fighting.  Their courses are short and may leave the guy who is more hardcore unfulfilled, but the courses are also not very expensive and a good way to supplement what you've learned.  I've taken some courses there: concealed carry and defensive knife, not the most elaborate, but pretty good for what you pay for.

Center Target Sports in Postfalls offers courses.  when I worked for an Armored Car company they were going to use that place for training and qualification on handgun and shotgun.  That never came to be, so I never got to train there, but I hear a cop owns that place and they are pretty good.

Masaad Ayoob's LFI teaches some courses in CdA once in awhile.  I"d like to take one of those to check it out.  Go to www.ayoob.com and check out the schedule.  I think there may be some courses left in 2009.

Thats all I know about, share the info if find more.
