I'm looking for a Ham/CB combo radio to go in my truck.  Can you guys point me in the direction of a nice one?  I'll be taking my Ham test as soon as school is over for the summer.  Till then, I like having the CB.  Thanks!

I am not aware of any "combos" avalible. They are 2 totally different systems in the manner of the frequencys they operate in. It isnt as easy as it sounds.

Hmm well Its something I searched for a while back and had not found. Its kind of an item that is not normal. Its two seperate purposes one requires a LIC one does not. along with the freq range difference its a pretty big difference in tuning and antennas. 10M to 2M or 70CM. Its a very different set of freq's If anybears head is up his ass it must smell like crap. those radios would not be the norm.

No such beasty as a combo dual service that includes amatuer radio and citizen band 11m, but,
this'll do ya if you are thinking about upgrading. Works great for 'monitoring', and
it is realllllllllllllly easy to modify for out of band transmit. For transverter IF use,
and emergency  comms of course..
HRO is your friend.
For the legal disclaimer, transmitting on the 11m cb band with an amatuer radio
is a no no, so is speeding, peeing in public and using a 3 gallon flush toilet in
a new residence.. Of course the FCC makes it a thrill sport due to the largish fines if caught.
One thing to be aware of, most newer amatuer multi band transceivers are the suck on AM TX due to being
low level modulated rigs. Don't expect much over 25W on AM or you run out of audio.
Spanky was right though, a HR2510 is a snazzy little rig that will work well on 11/10M circuitry wise, legal wise
is another matter. RCI 2950 is another, but, is mostly (internally) a cb modified for sale for amatuer band use.
Both are 25W SSB, 10W AM/FM capable radios out of the box.
ICOM 706MKIIG is a good option also, but getting over a grand now if new.
Easy to get the license, just put the study guide next bed for end of day reading.
A month or two of that and you are ready to go. Might as well get familiar
with the General class question pool while you are at it, cost the same to take
both exams so when you pass the first, give the second one a whirl for your moneys
worth.

Silly boy...

You need to think before you speak.

Spanky is correct.

Now that being said, there are a few that would do the trick as Bruiser pointed out..

However they would not be type certified, and you could lose your lic if you do not play by the rules.

Really,

Lets just say I have had my ticket before you could talk...

10M and 11M are VERY close... And as fact would have it, I worked the whole world with a radio that used a CB attenna. I still have the radio and attenna. What do you think about that??!?!! I also have the QSL cards to prove it.

You need to learn something about Ham radio before you go and shoot your mouth off!

And it goes to show you haven't a clue when it come to RF... HF is NOT VHF or UHF

well seeing as how I know what the bands are and how close they are I'd say thats a moot point. I am not stupid there spanky. I also know midding and running in area that you are not allowed to can also cost you your lic. Soooooo... with common sense applied. . .  its not wise to have a toy like that. Its nice that your old and want to rub it in... it just means your closer to the grave than I am

Yes I know you can use the same antenna for 11/10M Its not optimised, but it works.

I know its HF, Thaks for pointing that out... I did learn all that as I was studying for my LIc.

It is NOT illegal for a Ham to mod their equipment... Just dont transmit out of band.

That goes for lots of bands... I use a G5RV and an antenna tuner.  Good to go on everything but 160

Then you already knew you could get radios that would run on the CB/Ham bands?

That all being said,

NWTimmy the type of radio combo you are looking for is NOT what you want.

Get yourself a good CB, and a good 2M/440 rig.  Im running a CrapShack CB with a Larsen NMO antenna on the front fender. For now Im also just running my VX6R with a Magmount antenna on the roof of the cab. that gives me 2M/440/220. simple, and easy. I will be moving my Yaesu 8800 with a NMO mount to the truck...

I do own a President HR2510 also ( Thanks to Spanky for getting me a good deal off of CL)  It is opened up, and will work on the CB bands, but honestly... I have a good CB, and it is not worth monkeying with. I am looking at doing the 12 meter mod to mine after I get it cleaned up.

So tell me... how many antennas have you made?

How many MHz are there between 11M and 10M?

And speeding 50 in a 30 will get you a trip to jail

thanks for all the advice guys.  I'm going to start my studying in two weeks when I get done with my summer class.  I should be able to get my lic (which ever one I go for) before fall semester starts.  I'll just get a good cb for now, and load up with ham gear later.

Shit, if I could get my technician ticket in a 3 week period, you should be able to get yours in a snap! I am a wee little slow you know lol
