Something is wrong here. My CPU usage is running at 100% constantly. Pages are loading at dial up speed. Everything is running slow.  It's only been a problem for a week or so.  I'm using AVG, Adaware, MS Defender and Spybot. Everything reads OK. Web browser choice doesn't make a difference either. I use either Firefox or Safari. Task manager shows 63 running processes. It's a Toshiba laptop, P4, 556kDDR RAM. I've got DSL and two computers and a printer on a small, secure wireless network. My net surfing is pretty much limited to ARFCOM, other gun sites, photobucket and, e-mail. Very little else.

I don't know what other info to provide. Can someone help?

ETA; What a way to waste post 357.

If you sort the processes by CPU usage, whats using most of it?

Do you have Norton AntiVirus?  They suck...  Ditch them...

It bounces around. Safari.exe, taskmanager.exe,lsass.exe, among others. Safari is the biggest memory hog. Aprox 147k usage.

So, it appears to be browser related then..what plugins do you have running?

Either browser is pretty much box stock. No plug ins that I know of. I bounce back and forth but have been using safari for the past couple of weeks. The only plug ins that would be used would have to come in the automatic updates. I haven't added anything.

start "MSCONFIG" from the run command.  On the "Startup" tab, How much garbage is in there that you don't recognize?

I really must perform work related activities. PCR please check your PMs.

I'll check back later this afternoon. Thanks to all who are trying to help!

I agree with PCR-00 that it may be browser related.

You could also download and install Malwarebytes from Malwarebytes.org and do a full scan.

See what it comes up with.

I second GMW's malwarbytes suggestion –– My dad has been hit twice by the Anti Virus 2009 thing and it cleared it right up. Symptoms were similar but with Firefox.

Generally speaking, Safari on Windows sucks (and this comes from a Mac guy). Use Firefox or Chrome from Google instead.

Is AVG really running? I've had a problem on my wife's laptop the last few weeks where AVG has had a corrupt file and won't download any new updates. This is a known problem and AVG has a utility to remove the files so new updates will work again.

Here's the AVG FAQ on it

Yeah, I second the browser thing as well (third it?).  A lot of those things have very memory intensive clients which can choke up your computer if you're running <1gb of RAM.  I'm starting to find the same issues with my home computer and Firefox.  Try Chrome though, see what happens.

Did this, I also upgraded to AVG8 and will run after malwarebytes gets done

Doing this right now.

I also turned off all non essential items in the tool bar too.
My "quote fu" sucks!

I'll update later.
