Did anyone else see this story on the news last night?  There was a gun turn in around here and so many people came to give their guns away that they had to start turning people away because they could not take anymore!  I for one would have taken them had I been there.

This is the link to the story before it actually happened:

Looks to be an annual event

Annual Gun Turn-In

The
Ceasefire Oregon Education Foundation hosts an Annual Gun Turn-In to
provide a place where gun owners can dispose of unwanted firearms. For
each firearm turned in, residents receive a merchandise certificate.
With the advertising for this event, we raise awareness of the risks
and responsibilities of gun ownership, including the importance of safe
storage.

2008  Gun Turn-In

       November 1, 2008

   7 a.m. to 2 p.m.

5933 SE 92nd (near Woodstock), Portland

$75 Fred Meyer gift certificates awarded in return for firearms.

Number of guns turned in at Ceasefire's annual turn-ins:

 1994: 600

 1995: 300

 1996: 689

 1997: 907

 1998: 1069

 1999: 692

 2000: 692

 2001: 504

 2002: 365

 2003: 356

2004: 115

2005: 95

 2006: 108

2007: 245

TOTAL: 6,731

What is the difference between the Annual Gun Turn-In and the Year-Round Gun Turn-In?
The Annual Gun Turn-In is held at a specific site on a specific day,
and each person who turns in a gun receives a merchandise certificate.
Under the Year-Round Gun Turn-In, the person with the gun contacts a
law enforcement officer to arrange to turn in the gun, and no
certificates are provided in return.

Reasons to turn in a firearm:

•  Young, lively, curious children are at your home.

•  Someone in your family or a friend or neighbor is suffering from depression.

•  The firearm cannot be properly stored.

•  The gun was left by an earlier occupant of the house.

•  You can't guarantee that someone else won't get the gun.

•  You want to do something to reduce the number of gun accidents, suicides, and homicides.

You understand that a gun in the home is much more likely to kill or
injure a family member or friend than it is to protect you.

•  You would rather have a gift certificate than the gun.

Afraid of guns? So was I... until I took a trip to the shooting range

-Other than the announcement I don't see anything in the news source about the gun buy back

They might not have put it up yet because it was just run last night.  I saw it on the 10:00 o'clock news and was amazed at how many people were actually willing to part with their guns.  All I could think was "I bet every one of those people vote Obama".

I'd like to see the NRA do a "gun turn in."

Turn in your unwanted guns, to be given to a needy hunter/family/loving person. Perhaps offer a free pass to a game park, bingo hall, McD's, etc.

or they had POS gun that weren't worth $75

These are from a Springfield Ill buy back in 2007

Mayor Tim Davlin has declared the city’s first ever gun buy back program to be a tremendous success. Preliminary figures indicate 519 weapons were turned in to the Springfield Police Department between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. today. Final figures will be available, once all the official paperwork is tabulated and processed.

“This far exceeded our wildest expectations,” said Mayor Davlin. “When we planned the buy back we had no idea how many guns we would get off the street. We had hoped for as many as 100. But, collecting over 500 firearms today has is absolutely tremendous.”

Early on, people were given $100 gift cards for each gun they turned in. But once the gift cards were handed out, receipts were given which will function as IOUs for individuals to receive gift cards in the near future.

Sure, there are a few worhtwhile pieces in those piles but the vast majority are crap.

I think $75 is exactly what I was able to recover from that POS

Some people actually believe this is their real goal. If it were not for fear of getting a bunch of stolen guns I would try running gun turn it ads in the paper. Most of what you would get would be junk, but there are some nice guns out there getting turned in.

It is an effort to slowly, but surely get people accustomed to turning in guns. It is an effort to numb society for future gun turn-ins that are far more forcible.

In all actuality it is not criminals or “gun owners” turning in guns. In actuality, it widows and children getting rid of dad/grandpa’s guns

I wonder if they bother to check if the guns that are handed in are stolen or not, or if they just destroy them even if they have no right to do it...... I say this because one of their reasons being if the gun was left behind by someone, sounds like they don't give a shit......

oh yea and that reporter looks like a lesbian.

Decent article. Rather than making fun of/resenting gun haters/gunaphobics, it may be a good idea to challenge them to be open minded and give it a shot.

I would want to watch them if they looked like in porn, in reality about 99.9% of the time they are hideous and no guy would touch them, so they became lesbian.

So can we ourselves sponsor a "gun turn in" Just got to get rid of the junk, and see what happens, I remeber hearing of the guy that brought an RPG to a Gun and weapon turn in a few years back.

Its a shame someone threw away one of the NAA 22 magnums in the photo above.
