A friend of mine found this after her dad died, SW in 38 special.

Anybody help with the model, or value?

I would guess an old model 10, damn fine revolver according to my dad who carried one for a number of years.  Values go all over the place.

Trigger pull is real light, I would like to get her to shoot it but she like the tinny 32auto things. BBL is in good shape, dirty though.

Any distinct markings on it?  Look on the back of the grip, each side and bottom of the trigger guard.

Serial numbers all over the place, no model number anywhere. All the serial numbers match also.

Two thoughts:
1)  If it's a Smith, go see Tamara.

2)  Open the cylinder, and check for a model number right in front of it.  That's where the "MOD 10-5" is stamped on mine.

Edited to add:
Thought number 3)
Visit Smith & Wesson and request a History Letter.

Nothing on the front or frame, the rear has the serial # and    S      V

The Victory Model was produced during WWII, its essentially a S&W M&P that was not finished as nicely as the pre and post war models but is mechanically the same. When the 1,000,000 M&P, Model of 1905, 4th Change, was produced (1942) the factory added the V prefix to the serial number and started again at V1 to about V769000, then a new safety feature was added(1944), a hammer block, and the serial number sequence was changed to an SV prefix thru about SV811800.

There's not going to be, that gun is pre-model numbers.

It's a S&W Victory Model.

Make damn sure it's 38 Spl., and not 38 S&W. Serious differences in pressure and performance. If you need some 38 S&W, show me a little leg, maybe I got some, maybe I don't.

I gave my wife one simulare, she likes it.

I looked this up in a S&W book and it is as the link provided by GrabMyWrist.

It is a special so you can shoot 38 special.

Looks like it was made pre 1947. The V models was for victory over the axis powers.

Happy shooting.

Right on the BBL first thing I noticed, "38 S. & W. special ctg" I would say it is a 38 Special. I don't think the Victory was sold in 45ACP.
I am just trying to get a feel for what it is worth, she wants to sell it to get a new Auto.

I think she is nuts because her dad was one of the WWII hero's.

The M&P/Victory models have the funky grips not the standard 2 piece Smith grips more commonly encountered, think of every checkered wooden gripped revolver from the 50's-80's you've ever seen. Most of the M&P/Victory models I've seen have the lanyard ring on the bottom. Ive had a pile of Model 10s over the years and like the old Smith K frames, but mostly too shoot rather then carry. Stopped carrying a Model 10 when I was 19

I know that I would love to have a military marked one with the holster like PCR's
