Anyone gone through CMP to pick up a M1?  If so, what grade did you pick and how did it fair compared to the description?  Pictures would be badass.

Ordered a SA service grade back in 2003 with the full intention of getting one just to round out a collection.  The moment I opened the box I instantly became entranced by all that steel and wood and said, "I get it now."

Sure there are more 'practical' firearms, but that first Garand is one of the few firearms I have that I truly cherish.  Get one and you will understand.

The description was accurate although I was more fortunate than others in that it was probably refinished just prior to storage so the metal was excellent right out of the box.  The wood is in very good shape with a few dents in the stock and one small chip in the lower handguard, but no serious problems.  I refinished the wood with Tru-Oil.

Ordered one of the last available rack grade woodless Danes last year.  That one needed a new triggerguard.

Sorry, I don't have any decent pictures right now.

I picked up a Service grade back at the end of 2006, I got a great gun. The wood is nice, the metal is all good. And it was manufactured in Oct. 1943

It shoots great.

I also picked up a case of Greek .30-06 from the CMP at the same time.

I picked up a service grade Springfield in 2004.  Finish was a bit on a warn side, but considering it's age, not bad.  The nice bonus was that the barrel and receiver matched.  March, '44.  Accurate little shooter.

I did the same thing in 2002.

Funny your reaction was the same as mine

Opened the box and thought "OK, now I understand"
Owning one is an honor.

A Garand is a must have for anyones collection.  Mine is a post war Commercial production, so it doesn't have any history to it.  But it is still one of my favorites.

I have ordered a few over the years. They are getting less friendly and more sales oriented over the years but they are the best deal going.

Every CMP rifle you buy gets another one out of the governments hands and into private ownership so you are saving history.

Every rifle has a story.  Pay the right money and get lucky and you can end up with a really cool piece of history.  You can spend on Correct or Collector grades and get a beauty.  Buying a betetr grade means you get a nice rifle, even rack grades have been known to be amazing.  One of my buddies got a nice 1944 Garand with correct reciever/barrel, sights and bolt.  It was a good shooter and very restorable.

I bought a Danish Winchester with a minty new VAR barrel ages ago and use it for John Garand matches.  I replaced the trashed beech stock with a nice Boyt set.  It has a matching Winnie reciever, bolt and trigger group and is that lovely Winchester green park.  It shoots great.

I can recommend them 100%, if you hate your gun,,most of us would be happy to buy it from you anyway.

So could someone describe the process by which one buys from the CMP?

CMP = Civilian Marksmanship Program, correct?

This is the last CMP Garand I bought in 2006, a Greek return service grade (I have three of them).

This one had no cosmoline or grease in or on it, all I had to do was spray all the metal down with Gunscrubber, give the bore a quick patch run through and oil/grease it up.

I've got a Field Grade sitting at my parents house that I haven't seen yet, and a Correct Grade on order so it'll hopefully be there by the time I get back. Then I'll play with them, and let you know

Rest assured, you'll fall in love with it. And, if you don't, at least, just like your first hooker, you'll always remember it fondly.
