For a semi-auto there's the Romanian WASR-10 (AK clone) that can be had for $400. 7.62x39 is still relatively cheap and plentiful, and an AK is definitely one of those "must haves" for anyone, especially someone 18 years old. Personally though I'd recommend an 870 or another pump 12ga. as your first gun.

12 guage is nice but i'd rather have a rifle, 7.62x39 is good to the walet and the sks is a dependable gun but if i go that direction I'd just get the ak

+1

Unless you have a really cool dad and lots of experience with firearms, learn the basics first.  A Ruger 10/22, and its ammo is very cheap.  Once you've learned how to shoot, move on to a centerfire "cool" rifle.

If you don't know the basics and start with too much gun

1.  You'll waste your money on ammo
2.  You'll be developing bad habits that are hard to shake.

My first firearm was a M4gery, didn't learn how to shoot it right for a whole year... then I finally signed up for a class...  I was amazed at how much ammo/money i had wasted!

While I've done my share of it for shits and grins, it's just to damn expensive.  And Huge Gators SOT buddies bring the real McCoy FA made it seem much less enjoyable.

Very true, before I left for Iraq 5.56mm box of 20 was about 4 bucks a box of winchester back in NY (yeah yeah I'm free now) and I could get a case of 500 for around 100 bucks, now I look at it's 10 a box for 20 rds here in WA and NY.  That was a downer, a lot changes in 15 months.

Absolutely go with a .22LR.  You will be able to afford to shoot it and develop marksmanship skills.
The shooter is more than gun.  The .22 will help you develop into an accomplished shooter.   I've been shooting a 30+ years, and own a ton of guns, and I still shoot my 10/22 and 77/22 often.

i started with a 10/22 when i was 6 or so and now my safe is mostly full of rimfires like i said in my first post its a good way to learn good habits cheap it may not have as much appeal as a bigger caliber but the lack of recoil helps you learn the ins and outs of point of aim and other related skills.

+2 Start with the 10/22.  The aftermarket parts can keep you poor for awhile.  Then get a 12 to 18 gun safe and spend some time filing it up!!

1for all those who keep saying stuff about the 10/22 and are telling me to learn to aim first before getting a bigger gun all i have to say is the therd time i shot my dads 45acp i pinged a propain tank 40 yards off first gun i shot was a british 303 then the twelve gauge the ar15's, ak's, ar'10, 30 30's, 30 carbine then after that was the first 22 i shot
2 the moisin is a lot more accurate then the ak and is'ts always nice to hit the stuff your shooting at
3 last but not least.........
i'd get laphed out of the lcr if all i brought was a 22, @#$% that! i want a gun that i can look at and say, i like that gun, not i wish i had bought that ak

+1 on the 10/22 for a first gun.  Cheap; good quality; reliable; customizable until you run out of money, credit, and room in your house; ammo is cheap; high cap mags available; there is nothing bad to say about the Ruger 10/22.

Ive had a mosin, an sks, 10/22 and then 870. I'd go with any of them. The mosin in a fun gun, I'd get an m38 if you have the chance its more fun to shoot than the longer 91/30. With that said, you cant go wrong with a .22. Its cheap to shoot, not as much fun as the bigger guns but its great way to learn skills cheaply. 870 is also really fun, and so is the sks, but ammo is a bit more expensive for those two...

no matter how you go be careful guns are an addictive hobby. Once you've got your hands on one you wont be able to stop

sounds like the 10/22 idea offends you. .. It really shouldn't, the 10/22 is a great platform, and you can do plenty of things to it yourself. . . . but if your really opposed just wait until the EE has a SAR for under 400.

Go with what you want.. but know what you want out of that rifle.

If you just want to shoot to look cool.. or do you want to shoot accurately.  AK's don't have the accuracy, but they do have a bit of fun factor.   Personally for me I rather go for accuracy.

I started shooting on a M1A, but later bought a Mini 30 for myself.  Sold that to get my AR.  The Mini 30 drove me nuts since it wasn't very accurate.  I should have gotten the HK-91 when it was cheaper back then.. (Shot my friends G3 and it was damn nice.  Hit metal taget 400 yards out).

As for being young like you. im only 20 and have been shooting for a couple of years I would go with a .22 to.

Esp if no one else shoots in your family, like your old man or someone.. Its easy to learn with and ammo is dirt cheap compared.

Get good with the .22 then move on if you have the money. I was lucky enough to inherit some guns from my grandfather so that got me into the sport. My dad has always shot just always to busy. So after getting my pick of my grandfathers guns of the least expensive ones that my dad or uncle didnt want i was sucked in guns, in a good way tho.. Not long after i bought a 10/22 and had my dad get me a walther p22. Would go out with my best friend and could shoot all afternoon up in the mountains for only $20. Tons of fun and you get to learn.. Shortly after I got 12 gage and after falling in love with it bought a maverick 88 sawed off. Practiced up with shooting clays and just had fun learining the basics.

Finally got out the guns i inherited
lee enfield .303
.22 Savage HP (which i never shoot to expensive)
Remington 700 in 8mm rem mag (just slightly more kick than a .22)
Taurus pt101 in 40 S&W
Walther ppk 380 auto..

Had a good start to my collection all before I was 20. but it was a lot more expensive and couldnt blow thru 1000 rds per day.. shoulder cant take it either since im not a real big guy by anymeans. Spent all of last summer goin up and shootin driving around exploring having fun (Being legal no loaded guns and stuff in the car, just wanna make sure to let you older guys know there are law abiding younger kids shooting.)

Where all these guns enough.. nahh couldnt have to many guns

WIth the help of my dads friend put together my first AR and its a blast. no doubt expensive to shoot being a mag full is as much as an afternoon of shooting before. Tricked it out threw my money into it. Definetly something to get before Obama takes office if you can..

My birthday rolled around January hmm what can i get myself. new car nah spend money on guns.. I wanted something in 9mm that was cheaper to shoot that than the 40 so i went with a H&K USP 9mm got a good deal on a used one that was practically brand new. made in 1992 and not a scratch. Its tons more fun that a .22 but its more expensive but you learn good habits with a .22

Ruger 10/22 prolly about $200 maybe less
$12-15 for a box of 550 bulk ammo at walmart (gone up since i started crazy)

Lots of fun priceless hat$160 for 500 rounds surplus
H&K USP $550
$320 for 2000 rounds

Fun day at the range that breaks the wallet

Not to mention the 50 bmg upper thats in the mail..

All said after my life story get a .22 to start with then move on. yes its not as manly but who said u had to shoot that for the rest of your life.
