Do any of you ladies raise chickens?  I grew up raising chickens, but in a free range environment.  The whole in-the-coup-for-the-majority-of-the-day thing is new to me, as is raising chickens in the city.  Got any tips for raising in the city, breeds that fare will in the climate?  Got any materials for coup building you need to get rid of?

In a city?  Did you check your local ordinances to make sure it's kosher?

Why does it have to be about the ladies?

I'm in Edmonds and we used to have a couple Plymouth Rock's and a Rosecomb Bantam.  Both did very well in this area, but if you want eggs for more than 6 months out of the year you will need a light on a timer in your coup.

Light and timer. Check.  That's the type of info I'm looking for.

If you keep them near the house, and/or have other pets, I'd really be on top of the flea control.

I've kept chickens twice, and both attempts were short lived after the unbelievable flea problems during the summer months. (maybe it's regional or species related?)

We had the best luck with Barred Rocks (sp?) , they had the best temperament. I have been out of chickens for over 10 years...don't know if the breeders have come out with anything better. I found the Rhode Island Reds to be too skittish.

IM me if you are looking for 2 x 4's to construct the hen house.
