Anyone planning on a trip to another state in the near future where alcohol tax isn't totally ridiculous?

I was looking to buy a 1.75L bottle of Myers Dark Rum and it was almost $40.  IIRC, it's only about $20 down in Kali.

Also, IIRC, sales tax on alcohol in WA is somewhere over $20/gal, where Kali is something like $3-$4/gal.

And which government agency do you work for?

I don't work for the Department of Revenue YET!!!  I have until September, then I can afford to pay state taxes!

California is cheaper but not THAT much.  You save an average of $5-$10 per bottle...

Yes it IS that much cheaper. My in-laws just brought back about 10 bottles of various stuff from Costco in CA. A bottle of Bacardi thats $36 here is $19 there just as a start.
Ya better get some CROWN if yer down that way---

I did just 3 weeks ago when I was down for a funeral...

1/5 of Crown Royal... WA liquor store $26.95 (tax included) ... Ca. $17.99 + 7.75% tax ... Savings, under $10
1/5 of Tanqueray #10... WA lickme store $29.95 (Tax included) ... Ca. $19.99 + 7.75% tax ... Savings, under $10.
1/5 of Capt Morgan Spiced Rum... WA price $18.95 (Tax included) .. Ca. $9.99 + 7.75% tax ... Savings, Still under $10

Now, ask me how much my airfare, parking at Sea-Tac, and boarding my dogs cost...
... A hell of a lot more then the few bucks I saved at a California liquor store!

Don't get me wrong, there are savings to be had if you are going to Cali anyhow. Even at $10 per bottle, if you buy a case of 12 bottles you are saving yourself $120.

IF you are looking for 1 bottle, suck it up and pay the WA price or stop drinking if you can't afford it.

Your savings are a little under $10, but your also looking at a 1/5th.  The tax I stated was for a gallon.

So...:
750ml
   WA: $26.95
   CA:  $17.99 + $1.39 = $19.38
   WA - CA: $7.57

In a gallon there is 3,785ml:  Big difference.

Ah hell, I'll go look up the tax charts.

Check here as of 2006.
CA:  $3.30/Gallon
WA:  $21.30/Gallon

Point taken.. but when was the last time you bought alcohol in a 1 gallon bottle? 1.75L is the biggest I've seen... Unless you are buying E&J Gallo Wine.. But that's another story.

My point is, although California is cheaper.. It's not astronomical!

If you can't afford the taxes, don't buy the product. It is a luxury you know.

If I bought some, it would be by the case.

And Dino, hush!  If I get that much of it, there is a 99% possibility that when I finally show up to LCR, there will be plenty of rum to go around.

I think ex-gov Gary and gov Chris called it a "sin tax" (alcohol, tobacco, coffee, soda, etc..) ... So much for dem taxes only effecting the "rich people"...

Find somebody you know who lives by the Canadian Border,

Or find a friend that is active duty and have them buy it on base. Same goes for tobacco.

Booze is still expensive on base, AAFES has to rape you every chance they get. I don't know about smokes, I know the Commisary used to carry cartons for pretty cheap, but I don't smoke or chew so I'm not sure.

I *think* AAFES has a rule where they have to charge close to the local market price for stuff. Which is why alcohol is sometimes cheaper, but sometimes not, and why gas is usually a good deal, but is isn't a smoking deal compared to off-post.

Imagine if AAFES gas was 30 cents cheaper than off post, to take advantage of no WA gas tax ...

Or retired.

Same goes for tobacco.

But not ammunition.
At least, I don't think so--I haven't been to the Rec center over by American Lake in a while...
