Just because a rut looks 2" deep does not mean it is..

Now even I am not that stupid

I was out screwing around with my Ranger today..

Mud..

No problem.

Snow..

No problem.

Bushes, small trees, etc..

No problem.

Ruts..

BIG problem

I had just gotten off a trail on the main road when I saw another trail with what looked like shallow ruts and being STUPID like I am I hit them hard and fast. 2" turned to 8-9" real quick

Back end high centered on the rear differential thus pushing the front down so I couldn't go forwards or backwards. Once I freed the rear and backed out all was good though

More like getting a little more fun out of the old ones before I go to street tires

Once school finishes I'll be doing a lift, rear lockers, and 34" tires

Choose your rut well.
You will be in it for a long time.

That's true of life too.  Free lesson.

Take the dog's advice - smell everything before you eat it!

I reserve four wheel drive to get OUT of trouble.  I suppose if you have a winch, it's ok to use four wheel drive to get IN to trouble.

Jonathan, did you ever fix the KLUNK in the Ranger diff?

4wd is the only way to fly in the snow or mud.. at least for me, the ass end likes to lift out of the water when in 2wd

The courier is the one with the clunk.. still fiddling with it, but strangely now it's not klunking or jerking She's old and tired, still trying to work it out. Planning on either rebuilding the engine as soon as I can figure this out.. for what a new rear end costs I could buy aanother Courier that is in much better shape mechanically

This reminds me of some years ago. A friend and I were driving a round off road with NV goggles on and I drove into what looked like a mud puddle but it was a 3' deep rut. Almost flipped the truck on to its side. After we got out I could have push the truck over with one hand.

Good times
