I bought my wife the Compaq R3000 about two yeas ago.

First thing I did was slick the hard drive, use the Compaq install disk and then use an OEM copy of XP.

Took a little bit of doing to get the drivers working, but I got rid of 99.9% of the unwanted crap.

I installed Adaware, Spybot and Spysweeper after I had bought it, didn't even connect to the internet and all three programs lit up like a Christmas tree because off all the spyware / adware / crap preinstalled on the computer.

My 3 year old Sony Vaio laptop is still kicking ass, too. Considering all that it has been through, I am both a bit surprised and quite pleased with it.
