| hey does anyone know of a law that limits the percentage of OC that is able to be carried. |
Who you gonna F'up? As far as I can tell, NY, MA, MI, and WI have restirctions or harsh laws... I would rather be shot with a pistol than be sprayed again personally... |
Taken from www.pepper-spray-store.com "One of the biggest misconceptions about defense spray is that the higher the percentage, the hotter and better it works. In most cases this could not be further from the truth. Most of the best, fastest incapacitating sprays in the world are from 2%-10%. The lighter the fluid, the faster is penetrates the membranes. The percentage has nothing to do with the actual SHU or "hot" in the spray. Also, thicker sprays can inflame the skin area more and last longer with this unnecessary inflammation. A good spray will put the attacker down and out allowing you to escape or take control of the situation." |
What stupid thing did you do to get stopped? ![]() I lost my 10% to Ofcr R......... about 13 years ago, I tried to go through the hoops to get it back and never did, Im not so sure there is anything other than the long line of company's that wont sell such and such, and I think they may have just been running off of that. Kinda like some cops think 5.56 TAP is for LEO only, or the Mags marked LEO only really means anything... Good luck and keep us up to date on what goes down, I would like to see how this one works out. BTW: I have been hit with the spray several times for my jobs, and Skillets is on the money, The scovold ( spelling? ) Heat Units are actually the big deal, and the smaller numbers tend to work faster. Even though it all sucks... |
Scoville But did you get the liberal media to represent you and tell them how you don't believe in guns but do believe in being able to protect yourself with pepper spray and put off an attacker long enough for the police to come to your rescue? |

The OC's percentage doesn't matter nearly as much as the SHUs when it comes to effectiveness, anyway. As I understand it, the higher the percentage of oleoresin capsicum, the longer the effects last. Scoville Heat Units, however, are a measure of how intensely hot something is. There are some brands available that offer fairly low percentages of OC that are still insanely hot, like Fox Labs. Their spray is 5.3 million SHUs, yet only 2%. When using OC, the objective is rapid, temporary incapacitation to allow you to escape or have the advantage as you transition to your next level of defense (likely a knife or pistol). How long the effects last is nowhere near as important as how rapidly and intensely they kick in. I have never read of any such law (in Washington and the USA, that is) and state with 99% certainty that there is not one. |
Ours is 18.5%. I think the worst part is how it keeps going strong for so long. No matter how bad the pain, I could manage it if it were totally gone in an hour. But my stuff lasted 36 hours ![]()

+1. Percentage doesn't matter a squat, its the Scoville Heat Units that make your skin feel like there's a branding Iron stuck to it, and sand in your eyes. If you're really looking to fuck somebody up, there's a company out of Bozeman Montana that makes Grizzly Bear repelent with the SHU's above 10 million. I think its marked "Not for use on Humans", but a little black spray paint will clear that right up! |
mine was 5 million |
CJ... Strat is not kidding. You are STUPID if you do this. Do yourself a favor, and spray a dab on your finger and wipe a tiny bit on your lips... Then if you can hack it...by all means proceed. |
that should be easy enough to verify... Get the incident number, and see if it was real, or if they were just jacking you. I would like to see where it is that they can take your property also. I really want to know what the deal is with this. |

I haven't taken a squirt yet, but intend to soon. Yeah, it's unpleasant, but I believe it's necessary if you're going to carry it. And I believe people should carry it. You can use it with a LOT less provocation than your gun. With my next paycheck, I intend to buy 3 or 4 cans of it so I have 1 just for practicing and a couple of spares. As much as this working business is kind of annoying, the having money part sure is nice. CJ, when you're sprayed, make sure the person doing so understands not to spray it directly into your eyes, but onto your forehead. To make the most of the situation, do some HTH practice or fire a string (being safety conscious, of course). It is quite possible that at some point in a fight you will be intentionally (or unintentionally) sprayed. Wash your head thoroughly with J&J baby shampoo, definitely before you get in the shower. I've read that it is rather unpleasant to rinse it down onto your pecker. Hoot, sorry I didn't get in touch with you again this week. I'm sick and busy as hell between work & school (I'm about to go get in the shower to get ready for work right now, as a matter of fact). Hopefully we can get together sometime later in the week to do what we had discussed. It sucks ass that your property was stolen. |
On OC concentration I found this interesting
and the baby shampoo is so that you can wash everything including your eyes without causing further irritation. |

"Back in the day" Tweak and I used to put on women's self defence classes with Gila Hayes from FAS (This was the early 90's). I don't remember the brand or specs, but I've been hit with pepper spray a few times to demonstrate that it takes some time to kick in and a knife weilding attacker can still close the distance and get a hit before going down. So, for the benefit of the gentleman who wants to get sprayed I recommend: 3 buckets full of water (duh) and a running garden hose. I didn't find any difference between J&J baby shampoo or regular old shampoo. A cheapie snorkle so you can leave your face immersed for a minute seemed to help me. Change your bedsheets the next morning (and perhaps the next morning too). The stuff that is out now might be better/faster at incapacitation than the product we used a decade ago. Trey |
| Another way to speed your recovery time is to have someone pour milk in your eyes. I have been sprayed will aerasol and foam, both more than once. Regular spray is faster acting than foam. But foam is like napalm, it hits, it sticks and it burns like hell fire. I should add that everytime I have been sprayed it was as a good guy not a bad guy. |
