Hey folks, I'm ready to settle in and buy a surplus rifle for pinking, possibly for hunting. The Russian M44, 91/30 has caught my eye due to the low cost of the firearm and ammo. Are there certain models that are more desireble than others? What local shop has these avaliable? Thanks! |

I would suggest any of the shorter Mosin-Nagants. The problem with the M44 is the heavy, lanky side-bayonet - while cool, it's a bit of a hinderance to hunting unless you don't mind taking it on and off... As far as I know, most every one of the makers of Nagants has put their rifles through various "refurbs" and "rearsenals" in the last 50-60 years, so you can pretty much expect the same level of value from any of them. The Finnish Nagants are slightly prized but are typically Russian in origin, but rehab'ed with nicer parts. Otherwise, I'd visit a Big 5 or two, perhaps Bullseye's or Mary's Pistols and have a look over their 91/30's and M38's. Find something you like - you can't go wrong at the price. And you're right - ammo is SUPER cheap - buy a case or two and start plinking!!! |

I would suggest looking at the 91/59 Mosin....they are cut down 91/30's, as such the barrels are a tad heavier. My 91/59 is accurate enough for hunting. Not finding a 91/59 I would suggest a M-38 carbine...no bayo to fudge with. eta..Big 5 carries these....G.I. Joes does sometimes as well. |
| What part of the state are you in? Mary's in Tacoma has some M-44s and an M-38 with laminate stocks that look really nice for good prices. I know my GI Joe's in Lakewood has M-38s right now, they go for about $100. 91/59s are going to be hard to find; I'm just glad I got mine from Big 5 years ago as an after Thanksgiving special $50 for a beautiful rifle. |
If you dont have a 91/30 or a M38, get the M38 first. The 91/30 is too long, and the M38 is the M44 without that abortion of a bayonet. I still need a M44, And a PLO milled AK kit, I will then have all of the common Russian rifles, then I can work on the Pistols. |
Don't forget the boots!
