My computer can't access my porno, er, um, DVD or CD ROM drives.  Tried removing and reinstalling, fiddled with the cables, removed the IDE bus drivers and reinstalled, and even tried using an external CDRW drive over USB2 and even that won't work!  HELP!

Does it recognize the drives in the BIOS?

Have you recently installed or uninstalled any cd burning software?

At any rate go here and follow the steps.  You can either save to your computer for later use or run when prompted.

It should fix your issue.

Dan,

Computer stuff is our family business... if you can't get it figured out, shoot me an IM or email, I'd be glad to help you with it(call it the ARFCOM family freebee).

One thing to try is to try using each drive by itself, just make sure they are set for master(or single). If the Master drive on the chain is toast, sometimes(most times) you can't use the slave drive.

As far as I can tell, it sees the drives in BIOS.

I have not installed any CD burning SW.

I will look at the tips in GMHips link.

Jonathon, I may take you up on the offer, I know (the area) where you live!

YOPD the link I gave you restores your CD-Rom and DVD-Rom settings in your systems registry.

For whatever reason sometimes drives are there but you cannot access them.

That link fixes that issue.

Well, it sees the drives, but cannot use them.  If a disk is in the drive, it can't see it.  I've tried different disk to see if the disk was the problem.

Do you receive any error message when trying to access the drive or does it just sit there and do nothing?

All I get is a little dialog box that says "please insert a disk in Drive *:"  I get this for both the DVD and CD ROM.

Do your cd-rom drives show up under the device manager?

Right click on My Computer and select Properties.

Then choose Hardware and then Device Manager.

Click the plus sign next to DVD/CD-Rom Drives.

Is there anything listed?

The drives show up in hardware mgr.  There are no signs in hardware mgr that anything is wrong, and looking at the device properties reports everything is fine.  Still can't access a disk.

Okay.  Under the device manager, right click on each of your cd/dvd drives and choose uninstall or remove.  Then reboot the pc and let it redetect them.

If that does not fix the problem I'll be here most of the evening.  We'll get it fixed.

You did, but I was looking for "Easy CD Creator *", not "Roxio Easy CD Creator *".  So there.

That shit was put on the machine when it was new 3 years ago or so by Dell.  I had nothing to do with it.

LOL.  Ok..  Ok...

That software is the Devil incarnated.

It's vicious.

I stopped using it years ago for the very same reason.

If you want a quality burning software that gets along well with Windows check out Nero Burning Rom.

I've always been able to use windows to burn CD's with very few problems.  I can't think of why I'd need special SW to do it, or I haven't needed it yet.  I don't even know why Dell would put that POS on the machine, since it's never been used.
