Alright guys...as some of you know I'm moving.  I forgot to call the damn cable company so I'm worried I may be without internet/phone for about a week.

The situation:  I have cable internet and VoIP phone service.

The new place has basic basic cable that comcast never disconnected (not the extend basic or whatever they call it these days).  The new place is within Olympia city limits.  The place I'm at now is also in Olympia, but about 7 miles away from the city limits.  If the cable TV connection at the new place is still there, is it possible (presuming I'm still dealing with the same Comcast substation based in Olympia) that I can just plug my cable modem into the new house and have an active working connection?

hum.

Depends if the cable line has a disconnect "switch" or a blocker in the loop.
When I got Road Runner (was part of Cox Cable) in San Diego I could take my modem to friends houses who had Cox / Road Runner capability (but no Road Runner service)  and plug it in and it worked.

It should work after a relatively painless phone call. Try it first, if no joy then call Comcast and have them direct you to a setup screen. I had the same problem a while back but I do not remember the url. Anyway, they sent me to a comcast URL that had connection setup info on it, I plugged in a few details, and it did the rest. It was like a Linksys Router setup screen if you know what I mean. The info was that information on your original comcast instalation invoice from where you first got their cable internet. So look that up if you do have to call them.

Yeah...thats what I did this morning.  I called them up and gave them the new info and yadda yadda said it wouldn't be till wed. that they could come out and "install the cable"

thanks for you input people.  I thought it might work. I'm taking my VoIP phone and cable modem with me the next trip over to see what I am dealing with.

Vonage.  I like them. Not too shabby. I think after taxes I pay $27.24 a month for voicemail and all the special features like caller id blah blah blah.

The cable modem should work. At least for a few days.

I went through the same thing when we moved into our house. Mu cable modem worked fine for about a week, then stopped. Comcast tech support said that the modems are address specific, and have to be reset after a move.

Pretty simple, took like 5 minutes.
