Tantel (and others) have the side plates for optics mounts. Getting the hole locations correct is important. I recommend a drill press. While we're bending, welding and riveting our receivers, it would be a good time to rivet or weld a side plate onto your genuine homemade AK. Generally, the method will be: Bend the flats Demill the kits Using your kit as a guide: trim front of receivers, install front trunnion Heat treat and install the rails Fit parts, trim receivers for bolt carrier and rear trunnion Rivet everything in place Sandblast and finish receivers It will be easier to do the all the rails over a weekend. Each rail must be heat treated, the extractor is re-heat treated, then the rails must be annealed. There will be lots of scale to be cleaned off the parts during the process. There are a few cuts made to the top rail that must be done carefully, so the bolt carrier functions properly. I'm thinking of picking up some Norrels flat black to finish the receivers with. We can do a blasting, heating, spray and bake party when we have enough receivers ready for finish. |

My Brother in law has already heat treated his receiver/rails, they look pretty good, and it was pretty fast with the Mapp torch... I still have not even demill'd my kits yet, (you guys keep hogging the tools) ![]() I am up in the air still on if I want to have my kit parked and then painted, I think the Polish UF would look cool done that way. Anyway gotta head out to work, you all have a good one. |
| Where are you doing the build? I am from Graham(puyallups south hill) I am willing to drive to a build anywhere closer than tri-citys( no offense dry side guys) I need to bend a couple of flats, and I would like to look first hand at some modified bolt cutters so I can do mine. I have a shop press that I can bring if needed. I have only put a couple togeather so far, but I don't think I'll be in the way too bad, just let me know when and where. |
