U.S.-Canada Border Leaves Many Jittery

By BETH DUFF-BROWN and PAULINE ARRILLAGA
The Associated Press

- At the edge of a sprawling raspberry field where Washington state meets British Columbia, a U.S. Border Patrol agent shakes his head at tire tracks that snake between rows of berries and over the international boundary, which here is a gravel ditch so puny a person could leap it.

"They're long gone," says agent Candido Villalobos, who raced to the scene after a surveillance camera spotted the vehicle _ transporting contraband? Drug money? Something more sinister? Too late to know. "They beat us," Villalobos murmurs.

Funny how they have never, ever, stuck around waiting for the Feds to come bust them. Maybe we  should put up signs reminding the smugglers that it is illegal to run from the law.

Until we secure our borders, we are open to attack. Anytime, anywhere from anyone.

This just about covers the worst case scenario.  I like the thought of an arfcom shoot and shovel weekend should some al jazeera types start filming our northern borders.

We cant have a party just because they take pictures or film.

Should they have the bad judgement to attack, there will be nothing to stop aparty however. Even then, they will do as cowards do, attack and retreat. There will be no frontal attack to counter.

There ya go!!!
If you visit the Peach Arch Park, there are no fences between the US and Canada. Nor are there any fences for most of the way from Blaine to Sumas. These areas are routinly used for smuggling. There was an article in today's Bellingham Herald about smugglers using the "Smuggler's Inn" in Blaine to smuggle Chinese and the like into the US. The front yard of this Inn ends on Zero Ave in Canada and there are no fences!! What did the vehicle have in it when it drove across? One would hope drugs or people and not a WMD or WMD materials. This is great example of how a Minuteman type action would be a positive deterrent to smuggling along the Canadian border. Minutemen observers in known crossing locations, could reports incidents as they occur and obtain a detailed description of the vehicle and driver. Vehicle patrols on H Street could assist by giving the Border Patrol locations of vehicle and people that have crossed illegally.

In any case, my hats are off to the guys who are making the border a little safer this July 4th!!!
