Has anyone here ever shipped ammo with UPS before?  What is the deal.  Do I need to pack it special or declare it?  I check out their site but cannot find anything about ammo, jut firearms.

Thanks.

It has to ship from a UPS hub and needs to be marked "ORM" "Small Arms Ammunition"

There's no Haz-Mat surcharge.

Sometimes it is just better to look up the rules they have posted on their web site, print them, and take them with you to their location. A lot of the people behind the counter do no know their own rules. Some of the supervisors do not know the rules. Even the people you contact on the phone do not know their own rules, often.

One time I called to ask them about shipping long guns. I just wanted to know what they considered an "outlet" and the person on the phone just said "we do not allow shipping of any firearms". I just had them go to their url that stated the rules and said "look at #9" (or whatever it was). Then he said "oh, you are right". Then I had to say something like "now back to the question I asked, which locations are considered outlets?". I do not remember the exact wording, but that about sums it up. It is at that point that I decided I better print out those rules that I quoted to the guy on the phone and sure e'nuff the person at the counter went and got the supervisor when I told them it was a firearm. She, much like the person on the phone, was under the impression that it could not be done. Luckily she accepted the printout as verification that they do and the shipping went pretty smooth from that point.

Anyway, look up what you can on their site. Google "UPS ship ammunition" or just go to www.ups.com/content/us/en/index.jsx and search around until you find the info you need. I would look it up for you, but I'm too lazy and the NASCAR race is on.

Ball and AP ammo are nor considered Hazardous Material.  (Possibly Incendiary or other special use ammo may be?)
I shipped LOTS of ammo using UPS and FedEx.  I haven't shipped any for the past 4 or 5 years, but when I was selling over the Internet, I shipped lots over the course of 2+ years.

I'm going from memory so you should ask for the requirements at UPS or FedEx, but I would still do it the following way if I had to do it again.

The most important things you can do is have your package look professional, use 200# crush proof corrugated cardboard, and print yourself out some ORM-D Small Arms Ammunition labels and post them on all four sides of your package.

I only ran into problems when the person behind the counter was uneducated on the shipping requirements.  I knew the requirement well at this time and educated a few counter people.  (Nicely)  If your package looks professional, (i.e. neat, clean, well wrapped and tapped) they never gave me any problems.

Fill out your shipping forms, mark it as ORM-D Small Arms Ammunition, insure it for the cost of the ammo and ship it off.

"ORM D" and Small arms ammunition needs to be on the outside of the package. Sometimes they get sticky about the regulation size of the sticker.
I was shipping a long gun one time and also brought the printout of their rules taken from their website and when I gave them to the manager she said" I can't accept that, I don't trust anything from the internet"///What a dingbat.

Well I got it shipped without any problems.  The only question I was asked was "Are there only cartridges in there?"

I didn't know what answer she was looking for like how it was packed (i.e., peanuts or bubble wrap) or if she wanted to know about any guns.  I told her there were no firearms in the box and that was good enough for her.  She put the label on it and off it went.

Thanks for the help.
