Hi everyone I have a few questions to ask here, currently I received word that I might be stationed at Ft. Lewis and am wondering about the laws in WA.  Can you own AR15's and other firearms that use to be considered "assault rifles"?  Is there any local or state bans that I should be worried about?  Also are there any good ranges in the Ft. Lewis area?

Good range on FT. Lewis is Range 15 by the MWR. Its open every saturday I think. Other than that there is Bullseye of "DC Sniper" fame (are they still in business?). You could probably find some places to shoot on the reservation and of course the hilltop area of tacoma has lots of shootings.

Suppressors, AOWs and DDs are legal to own in WA.  You cannot USE the suppressor however, as that would be a gross misdemeanor.  You can attach it to a host weapon all you want, just don't fire it.  MGs, SBRs and SBSs are all bad juju here (sadly.)

Yes

WA has state premption local governments can't pass firearms laws more restrictive than state law.

As you're coming from NY I'll just compare WA to NY

Machine Guns  NY-No  WA-No*(there is a grandfather clause in place for guns owned prior to a law change, I don't know if it applies to transferring from out of state)

Supressor  NY-No  WA- Yes*(Legal to own, not legal to use(It was a poorly written attempt to ban them that left a loophole for ownership)

SBR  NY-No  WA-No*(grandfather clause may or may not apply)

SBS  NY-No   WA-No*(grandfather clause may or may not apply)

AOW  NY-No (exemption for smooth bore AOW on a pistol license) WA- Yes

Large bore DD  NY-Yes  WA-Yes

Explosove DD- NY-No  WA-No

Shall issue CPL in WA is a PLUS.

I'd think you get to use the range on Fort Lewis
