I live outside Philly in Montgomery County. I'm a very safe and competent handgunner and have my CCW. I always hear people suggesting taking classes and while I'd love to go to Gunsite or Thunder Ranch, I don't have the time or money to pull that off right now.
Is there anything around here I could look into? My first attempt at looking around yielded classes all aimed at brand new shooters or very specific classes aimed at security guards. I'm just a dude who likes to shoot, knows his stuff, reloads, carries and wants to be better. I'd like to get into some competition scenarios, but I feel like maybe I need an intermediate step like a CCW class, or an urban defense class or something. Any ideas? Thanks!! |
| It just means I'm a knowledgable shooter who's been active in my sport and hobby for a number of years. I'm not new. I'm well versed in safety, mechanics of firearms, multiple platforms and techniques, but it's all self taught. I don't need a class that goes through how to load and unload a magazine. I understand sight alignment and trigger control. Im interested in the next level up- shooting while moving, using cover, training on drawing and firing from concealment. Something a more knowledgable shooter or instructor could pass on to me. |

I have no experience with them, just saw a post of theirs shared on Facebook.

Mr. Shatters,
Can't help you with the classes, however ,If you'd like to try some competitions Langhorne Rod and Gun club in Bucks County offers two options and both are open to the public. 1. Action Pistol is held the First Saturday of every month beginning at 0900. Round count is 60-80 rounds over 4 to 5 stages. You will need to move, shoot from cover etc. It is practical type shooing. 2. Service Pistol is held the last Sunday of every month. Round count is 50-75 rounds from a common firing line at various distances, generally conforming to a "Quals course" standard. This is an excellent start for a person who is a novice competitor or experienced shooters looking to brush up on skills. Notify the RSO's you are new to competitive shooting and then they will make sure you are comfortable at the match with the directions and procedures. Fees are nominal for both matches. |

Awesome and thank you. I'm cursorily aware of LPRGC and just wish it wasn't 45 minutes from me. I'm so envious of the zombie shoot, the period military shoots- I see all of them and long to attend. It really is attractive.
I'm a member of a private range in Audobon and I can shoot there nearly alone whenever I have time. Married with two very young kids means not much time. I mostly make it down in the evenings when I'm working up a new handgun load. I'll look into the ones you mentioned and see about getting away sometime. I appreciate your input. |
