A good friend of mine asked me a question that I could not answer, so I told him I would bring it up in here.
Can a Semi Auto AR15 be converted to a single shot rifle and legally used to hunt ground hogs in PA in the single shot configuration? Dane |

I converted an AR-15 for groundhogs many years ago. I called the PA Game commission back then (oh 1996/1997 I would guess) and teh rules then were that the change had to be such that it was a perminant change that could not be easily reverted with hand tools. So, what I did was took a standard AR-15, drilled and tapped the front sight base and used silver solder to bond the set screw to teh front sight base.
I never sent the gun to the PA game commission and I never had a game warden stop me to ask. I also had a side charging upper on it some time later and that used a FAL type charging handle to cycle the action which is far better then using the normal charging handle in that configuration! The single shot configuration should be legal as long as there is no way you can use it as a repeater. I considered taking a single shot lower for the project but never ended up doing one myself as by then I decided I would rather just use a Rem 700 then deal with a manually operated AR-15. Later on, I used the same upper as a 22lr conversion as that doesn't need the gas tube! Obviously, don't have a 22conversion kit with you while hunting !
Good Luck! |
