I am ready to apply for my license, however I need advice on the character references.
I was told by the sheriff that I will need two character references from carbon county. Now I am friendly with my immediate neighbors but not sure how they stand on guns. Also more importantly, I am not sure they know me well enough to vouch for me. I plan on asking them and will find out about the two concerns listed above.

My real question is, if they both agree to be character references what will they need to do. Right a letter? Supply contact info? I want to be able to tell them exactly what they need to provide. I will call the Sheriff back and ask what they want to have to that regard but I wanted to hear fist hand accounts/advice from fellow PA residents as to what there character references provided.

I am a new resident and do not have family or friends who live in Carbon County.

haveing a hard time remembering,.. but when i did mine for Schuylkill Co. i just put the names down,.. and maybe a contact number.

of course it goes without saying to use a reference without a record.

maybe some others that are on here and live in Carbon Co. can help you out?

When I did mine I used two references that did not even live in the same county I live in.

Make sure you have their ENTIRE address as I couldn't remember one of the guy's zip codes and luckily the deputy there had a guide that listed them all.

My understanding is that the Sheriff may contact them via whatever means he uses to ask character questions about you.  Mine were never called, can't say what your count would be like.

BTW I live in Allegheny County.

I used a reference from out of state on my second renewal (Delaware County). Not a word said and the application went right through.

ETA: My FIL used me for a reference. The Deputy came out in person. Asked me if the FIL was a drunkard or dug user. Asked if he was a wife beater. Asked if he was of good character and would I be concerned if he was permitted to carry a concealed weapon. Then he made some notes on his clip board, thanked me kindly for my time and left.
