Get a friggin clue would you .  Stop blaming the CCW carrying citizens for YOUR short comings .We don't need you to ask the governor to call up the National Guard . What we need you to do is step up to the plate and call for parents to be parents.  If you really cared about making this city a better place you would do just that.  Its time parents in the inter-city start being parents and raise their children with morals and not let run the streets like thugs and hoodlums.

I can tell you don't live near center city Jerry. The parents are thugs themselves or they're scared of their own children. This problem started before Rendell took office, it's just reaching the boiling point.

Mike
Your right I don't live in Center City . I live out by the airport and in the last few years there's been an influx of section 8 housing .  I see small children around 5-6 years old out till 11pm and back out running around by 8am the next day. These parents don't seem to care what they do .  Yeah the pots boiling over and we're knee deep in it .

I say we arm them all, use the Guard to cordon off the city, allow normal folks to leave, and let them go at it......with any luck they'll burn the shithole to the ground.

It would end faster that way.

I'm down in D.C. and last night I drove thru a section of town that looked just like North Philly and the taxi driver told me shootings haven't been that bad. What makes Philly so bad ? Is it access to guns or is it just the people ?

I think its the people, we all have the ability to make choices . You could take away the gun factor and you would still  have this violence on the streets . Life has no value to these people , how can it when they don't value their own lives enough to make the right choices.

Saw a good bumper sticker today in Philly:  Guns kill people like spoons made Rosie O'Donnell fat.  City hall just doesn't get it!

What's with the Center City bashing???

I grew up in  CC, and I still live there.

You guys must be lumping North and West Philly in with CC, but I don't care how you slice it-- Center City is the only civilized part of this city, and the people who live here don't let their kids play on the street, much less unsupervised.

By contrast, during the mid-to-late 70s and early 80s, I roamed the streets of Center City till all hours with my friends, and we never got in anything other than the kind of trouble most kids did-- breaking curfew was about as serious as it got. We returned home to a mother who was all questions, and we knew if we ever got in trouble, facing her would be the ultimate punishment.

So, not only does the kind of wildness you guys are on about NOT take place here, it is emphatically the parents' problem. I don't buy one single ounce of this horsecrap about "I have to work, so I can't supervise my kids.". My mom worked her ass off after my dad died when I was eight, and she never made more than 18-20k a year-- yet my sister and I always had clean clothing, plenty to eat, and I went to a private school for 10 years...and we weren't out luring other kids to their death for heroin money.

It's the parents, guys. And it ain't in CC-- I can walk the streets here all night, and never even get looked at funny by any goblins. If you get hassled in CC, it's your fault for letting someone get that close before signaling that you're not an easy mark. My girlfriend travels with impunity, too...never been hassled even once.

We can, of course, count on the Thief-in-Chiefâ„¢ to call for efforts to save The Childrenâ„¢, which rather than consist of any meaningful law-enforcement, will consist of pious pronouncements and restrictions on lawful CCW holders.

This is the same POS who scrapped "Live-Stop" because it "unfairly affected the minority "community"", even though they're the vast majority of the idiots driving around with no license or insurance, and doubtlessly an illegal handgun to boot.

Lighten up on CC, will ya? ;-)

I live in center city (old city) and I hear gun shots all the time.

I do agree most of center city is a different world compared to the rest of the city

No disrespect meant, Mike, but I don't think you're hearing shots-- Police wouldn't tolerate that in a neighborhood where so many out-of-towners go, and you would definitely hear about it on the news.

I do a lot of consulting in the area, and I'm there late at night, too. I've never heard or seen anything that would indicate someone had fired a gun.

You seem to missed my ranting points .  I hi lighted them for you . I blame the parents , its the parents  or lack there of ,that's the major reason these kids are like they are.

I live in Center City as well.  I just moved to Logan Square.  I used to live on South Street, near Graduate Hospital.

I may have heard gunfire once while living on South Street.  South Philly is not the best place in the world and once you start going south of South Street, things can get dicey.

Center City isn't so bad, as cities go.  I am a transplanted country boy from Chester County, and I hate cities.  But Center City isn't as bad as some other places.  Shall-issue CCW keeps me happy.

4th and Vine-- not quite Center City, and near where the clubs catering to the "Urban" clientele are all located.

That's your problem right there.

4th and Vine is nowhere near as bad as most other parts of the city.  If anything, it's a trendy neighborhood.

Trendy is not the word There are so many BMW's and Hummer's it's sickning. You can still hear gun fire every once in a while coming from 5th street or Callowhill street. Anyway I have 1 month left and I'm out of Philadelphia.

Congratulations!  I moved five months ago from Fishtown to the suburbs, and it's like I died and went to heaven!  The only downside is that I have to mow lawns now.

one a week?  If i sleep with my window open in the summer i'll hear one a night.  Sometimes multiple times in one night.  The closest was at most 30 yards out my bedroom window (in the intersection, i live on the corner.  Drive-by.  I hit the deck gun in hand.

So, yeah, i deal with this stuff myself and still see no reason for further restriction.

AMEN!!!  They try to figure this violence problem out and come up with "we need more gun laws" as if criminals follow the law.  If they did they wouldn't be criminals.  It is so true that if the parents whould just take an active role in their childs life we could start to fix the problem.  Another solution is, if people who live where all this crime takes place would just talk to the police about the crimes they see take place instead of being afraid that the criminals will retaliate against them for talking.  Once the criminals see that people in the neighborhood are not going to let them get away with these crimes they might actually think twice about commiting the crime.
