My family are flying in to town soon to celebrate my mothers 90th birthday. She has so many eating limitations a steakhouse is pretty much it.
We are looking for a place that is quiet as her hearing leaves her out of discussions if there is background noise. And of course comfort, service and quality food. I'm not going to say money is no object but we can afford the higher end places. Please post if you have personal experience at one or more places and can recommend them. Thanks |

If you want the best, there is only 1 option. Steak 44 and get a wagu filet. The seafood tower is also pretty awesome, as is the lobster mashed potatoes.
I eat at Ruth's Chris, Maestros City Hall, and Mortons semi regularly. While they are good, they really don't compare to Steak 44. |

Thanks. Location is Scottsdale preferably or Phoenix on the eastern side.
Joe, thanks for that. Steak 44 sounds good. Only question is the ambiance. is it typically low key low volume? If so it looks like what we want. Or maybe a little more plush would do can't really tell from their webpage what the tables and chairs look like and how closely packed they are. |

Except for the bar, yes it is very quiet. Oh, and ask for your steak "Oscar style" with a crab cake and hollandaise sauce. Very yummy. |

They have steak, but they are not a steakhouse. Everything I have tried is good. I am posting this because you can get private dining rooms there. They have a couple of rooms downstairs , that only your party occupies.

I still think Durant's is hard to beat for old school. I have never had a bad anything there plus it's not as stuffy and pretentious as some of the others.
Park in the back, walk through the kitchen, and have a decent glass of wine and great piece of meat. Make sure you order a jumbo shrimp cocktail or two for the table. I recommend the Stag's Leap Artemis 2012, 2013, or 2014 are all decent. http://www.durantsaz.com/ |

Steaks are tasty and seafood tower is incredible. Service is impeccable without being hoity-toity. The bar area can be a little noisy but there are plenty of seating options in the back rooms for quieter dining. Ambience is fantastic. Comfy and cool without that typical stuffy steakhouse look like some of the upscale chains. |

My sister is also involved in the decision. BTW, steak44 is a sister restaurant to Dominicks in Scottsdale. Same menu and owners.
Is anyone familiar with Talavera? They advertise subdued ambience and my sister is looking into that. At this point I'm done with bookings at Dominicks. But it might get changed so any information is useful. You all have already given me a ton of data and I do appreciate it. |

| I just ate at Capital Grille in N. Scottsdale for the first time the other night. It was OK but not as good as Steak44. The filet was not nearly as flavorful. Same for the sides. Just not very "memorable." Typical steakhouse atmosphere. Service was a little lacking, definitely not as personalized and attentive as Steak44. Surprised to see so many patrons in very casual clothing. I think I was the only one wearing a jacket. Doesn't anybody dress up in this town? Slobs everywhere. |

since we are just talking steaks here I would just prepare them at your house, 1 plate cooked to order specifically for the birthday girl. I would spend the other quality time taking her to desert botanical gardens, butterfly museum (pictures of her with buttlerflies landing all over her will be keepsakes), boyce thompson arboretum these involve walking so get her a wheelchair (everyone will call it a chariot) and take turns pushing - quality time spent with her. right now the desert botanical garden has that thing at night where everythings lit up.
you could get the food catered to your place also - restaurants suck 10 people go and you end up talking to only 3 people because of the seating arrangement. |
