Alright, I've seen a few postings on this topic here before, but none mentioned what the guy was telling me about CenturyLink.

First off, I have Cox currently and hit 30 down and 7 up, but there is a cap on usage. My household streams a lot and will be hitting the cap before the end of the month.

Now the CenturyLink guy told me that my area is an upgraded area at 40 down. He said there is no cap. He told me they got their bad rep from when they bought Quest. They've been upgrading all that old infrastructure.

Anyone in Mesa / an upgraded area that can give me a heads up?

Thanks.

Cox internet service is pretty much as good as it gets in AZ outside of dropping an arm and a leg on commercial grade stuff.

Their TV service is archaic, but you fortunately don't need one to have the other...

I'm sure ur going to get the same answers.  Cox Internet is the best in az.  And overall it is actually pretty good.  Cox Cable TV    ehhh..  it's ok.  I personally think direct tv has the best tv and best tv layout.  I've heard to many horror stories of century link screwing up their hill and getting double or triple billed and taking months to get fixed (usually by just crediting ur account)  and it happening alot.

I dumped cox for qwest/century link 4 years ago and couldn't be happier.  I just upgraded to prism TV (dumped direct tv) with a 20 mb internet connection.  I don't see a huge improvement over the 12 mb connection I had, but that isn't cent links problem. It is usually because the website I'm connecting to can't match the speed.  On YouTube and sites like that, my download buffer fills more quickly, is what I notice.

Cox doesn't give you the advertised speeds at all times, plus they throttle at certain hours and since it is a shared connection you neighbor can affect your connection speeds.

So...  you're saying you're approaching your limit on Cox this month?

we just upgraded to the Cox Ultimate.  It gives us speed 7 times the standard hookup and has no limit on usage.  I can't believe how fast all the computers in the house run.

I have a 250 meg usage cap that I never come close to using all of.  And I stream quite a bit myself.

What do you think of the Prism TV?

I'm getting a bit tired of Cox raising my rates all the time, and I feel like I need to at least threaten to leave to get it fixed.

Ironically, I haven't had outages or signal problems since my last rate increase. For a while there, it was periodic problems - usually, as soon as it happened, it was look outside, and there's a guy working on the box. But I think they were just swapping circuits, 'cause periodically you'd get shit signal, call and complain, and then it was fixed... but your neighbor started having problems.

Anyway, Centurylink just ran new line in my neighborhood, has rolled out the Prism at 2/3's what I'm paying Cox now... and I'm thinking about it.

For the first week, it's been great.  With my package, far more HD channels than was on direct TV.

From what I understand with Prisim (After talking to a bunch for Century Link people when I was thinking about switching) is that 1/2 your internet connection speed is dedicated to your TV.  The other 1/2 goes towards your Internet.

So if you have 20Mbps... You will only get 10Mbps +/- for internet...

I switched to COX a few months ago and couldn't be happier with the internet.  I have their cable TV too and I can't complain.  If it wasn't for the kids, I would dump cable TV. I hardly watch TV at all anymore.

The same problem exists with both of these companies.  They don't give a Sh*t about current customers.  Trust me in 3 years, your Prism TV will cost as much as your old COX tv.   My 3 year contract with Century Link will be up at the end of this month.  I will be switching to COX, negotiate the best price on a bundle and switch.  I will not sign any contract greater than 3 years.  Because in 3 years I will be paying the same as I'm paying Century Link today.  The only way to beat them, is become a new customer every 3 years.

Note quite.  It depends on what you sign up for.  My package has 40mbps split between TV and internet.  They can run a totally separate set of twisted pairs for TV.

Oh, I agree, CL's '2 year pricing' that they give you pretty much shows that on year 3, I'll be where I am now.

But then I could jump back to Cox. And at least I'd miss out on 2 years of cox price increases. I'm just afraid of having to jump -right- back if Prism sucks.

I have Direct TV for TV, and Cox internet.  Never ever had a problem with Cox internet, except for the price.  Thinking about going to a Verizon Jetpack for Internet, since I have unlimited data.

CL customer service is staffed by tards. Just that alone makes me stay away.

Have Cox in the metro apartment and Verizon wireless in the house down south. Happy with both, the Cox tap is first in line at the apartment so I get blazing fast and low ping, the Verizon is surprisingly fast and low ping as well, allowing gaming.

Screw them both!!!  I work for a business only carrier and  compete with CLINK and Cox daily.  I'm frothing at the mouth for GOOGLE FIBER.   Phx, Scottsdale and Tempe will be first in AZ to get it..

1GB SYNCHRONOUS circuit.

Now THATS bandwidth.

We have just Cox internet. It goes out around once or twice a day, and I have to restart the router. Doesn't matter if I'm sitting right next to it using wifi, or in the next bedroom (other side of the wall from the router). Thought about changing, but it looks like there is no point...

We had Century Link internet at my office and it was horrible.  Every afternoon the connection got slow and would drop for 5-10 minutes at a time.  It was hard to sync files on Dropbox.  We moved to Cox and haven't had any problems since.  The install guys were funky, but what installer isn't.

I used to have Direct TV for my TV.  But every time there was a monsoon, I'd loose my TV.  So basically, the only time I really needed to be indoors, I couldn't watch TV.  Then when the weather was decent and I was in the garage wenching on my bike, the TV was fine.

If weather effects your DirecTV, then your dish is not installed properly.

I had issues several years ago with weather and my DirecTV service, and had one of their guys come over to check it out. He said the dish was initially installed half assed, and he did whatever he did. Since then, it's been essentially 100 percent flawless. And that was almost 6 years ago now mind you...

I did make the switch to Centrylink and it was so bad I switched back to Cox in a week. I kept dropping signal with Centrylink and as soon as I switched back the problem amazingly went away. Fact is Cox guarantees their speed and Centrylink does not. I would try to limit Netflix (no HD steaming) or pay for the higher service from Cox.

Fact is....Neither Cox or Century Link guarantese shit on their residential platform... Because it's impossible to do so and "best effort" technology.   DSL and cable are both shared services.  Every subscriber to either within a 3/4 radius from you is all tapping into the same pool of bandwidth.  Guarantees come with dedicated synchronous circuits..  T1s, Ethernet over copper, Fiber...  I.e.  Business class services.   Think about it.. You get what 40Mbps down and about 10Mbps up at best during times a low congestion.. I.e. When the kids are in school or late at night. And you pay less than $100/month.  For a business class 1.5Mbps/1.5Mbps Dedicated T1 you're going to pay $200-$250/month on the low end.  A 40mbps fiber connection runs about $1500/Month

Yes I'm serious.

Since my Century link contract is over, I switched to cox today.  Bought a modem (@Frys electronics) and they will be out tomorrow AM to hook both Internet and TV up (Phone will stay with Century link).  I'll save (even thought my internet will be faster and I have more channels for TV), in the first year $30 a month, second year is equal and the third year is $30 more.  (I may not last the third year unless cox rolls some prices back).  They will hear for me since this contract is for 24 months.

I'm going to leave both modems sitting out - so switching in 2 years will be easy.

Update - Installer got out about 8:30am.  He cut & replaced every coax connector leading to my house and in my house.  He left at 11:00am, because "Houston there is a problem".  His boss came out 2 hrs later, and said the same thing.   Internet is broke (Does sign on once every 20 min for 10 seconds), Main TV finally after 5 hours booted the DVR, but all of the channels scrambled and the Bedroom TV works, with only 22 out of 350 channels.   LOL

I'm back on Century link internet.

We will see what happens
