don't eat there.  high prices and red lobster beats their food.

lobster was overcooked and tastes shitty.

King crab legs were nowhere near half a pound unless you count the bullshit tasteless body meat attached to the two skimpy legs and two tiny claws. when I order a pound and a half of crab LEGS at least a pound of that better be the fucking legs.  55 fucking dollars for this bulllshit.  Red lobster gives you more for about 30.

squash it was served with tasted bland and shitty.

worst seafood meal ever.  Can't believe people think this is a good place to eat. Ill hit red lobster or joes crab shack anyday before going there again.

This state is not conducive to good fresh seafood.  I agree, The Salt Cellar is average at best, a bit overpriced for what you get.  But I've had some very bad crab/lobster from Joes on a number of occasions questioning whether I should ever go back.

I stick with Van De Kamps fish sticks and tartar sauce.

It really shouldn't be that bad. We're only one state away from California,  and they have awesome seafood. New Mexico has an excuse, Arizona restaurants could do better.

Good to know. It was between there and Pappadeaux for dinner last Friday night and I'm glad we choose correctly.

If you're gonna spend that kind of money, do yourself a favor and go to Roy's or similar.

Salt Cellar was better a few decades ago.

In NM (Albuquerque), the only place to get good seafood is Papadeaux off I-25. Albuquerque has a few Red lobsters and one Landry's seafood house, but it sucks. I've had seafood in Boston, Portland, ME. and Seattle, and nothing land locked can compare in my opinion.

I can recall being a ramp rat for Alaskan Airlines.  I knew every flight fresh fish were flown in on commercial flights straight from Alaska.  Arizona not bing near an ocean is no excuse for poor sea food.

Nah, it even sucked then.
I still remember a really crappy and expensive meal there in the mid 80's

I've always had good luck with Salt Cellar.

Never had the lobster, though.

Growing up in S. Scottsdale my family and I would frequently drive past the Salt Cellar. As kids my brothers and sisters and I would always joke (I guess it wasn't too much of a joke because I believed it when I was little) that they just tunneled under Hayden to the cemetery and got their food from there.

I have never actually eaten there though.

Of course it sucks.  Their gimmicky tacky sign and shitty decor should set off alarm bells that there food will blow.  Good seafood, try J&G at the Phoenician, The House Brasserie in Scottsdale or the Market Street Kitchen.

Any restaurant thats menu looks like -

Shrimp Scampi 32
Another old Salt Cellar Favorite:
large Gulf shrimp served in garlic
butter sauce with onion and roasted
bell peppers.

Its behind the times and out of date, no one does menus like that.  Its gimmicky and reminds me of 1985.  A good restaurants menu will read like-

Chilean Sea Bass
Honshimeji Mushrooms
Miso Yuzu Broth

or

Shetland Salmon
celery root, dark chile vinaigrette, walnut pesto

Simple and easy to read, who really needs to read that the shrimp are large, or seared......they need to concentrate on the fucking food and not the overly descriptive outdated menu...

Only place in town that serves decent seafood that isn't very expensive is Pappadeaux.  Roy's is good but it can end up very expensive.  I am sure there are good places in Scottsdale, but I rarely get up there for dinner.

Even Red Lobster seems to have gone downhill since the recession in 2008 and the hill wasn't very tall to begin with.

Most times I eat a seafood plate for $15 or so in this town, I find Long John's Silver would be better for the same price.

BTW, I have been to California and didn't find any exceptional seafood there either, despite the places being highly rated in yelp, but I have not gone out for seafood for more than a few times due to having kids in tow.  I miss places in Houston where you could get great seafood at a hole in the wall type joint.

so who has the best king crab legs? I want big fat legs not a plate of claws and crab boob.

So far the keg and red lobster are the only two places I know will give me decent king crab legs.  Also some place in phoenix, can't remember the name but it is expensive.

I don't care about the rest so much as the king crab legs.

Me and the wife have been to Pappadeaux 4 times within the last 5 years and she always orders the small order of king crab legs. They are freaking huge, and the biggest that we have come across. Side note being that we don't eat at "high class" restaurants that often so I cant say they are the biggest/best in AZ but I can tell you with great confidence that if you get the same crab legs that we got the last 4 times we went there, you will not be disappointed.
