I'm thinking about renting a small house in Maricopa.
Apartments are out because I'd like a garage for my motorcycle.
Other than driving through a couple times I don't know anything about the area.
Good areas?
Neighborhoods to avoid?
Issues to consider?
Any arfcommers in that area?
Please IM me if you have any deals or ideas, I'm just browsing craigslist now.
Less than $1000 per month and a 6mo lease is what I'm hoping to find.
Thanks guys!

I dont know much about the area, but from what i understand if you have to come into the city everyday you will hate it. I had a buddy that moved out there and moved back in a year because of the drive.

It's about 30min from my work, and I just need a place to sleep & shower pretty much.

Lots of apts have stand alone garages that you can use now. I am in no way advocating apts, cause I hate them, but if you only need it for six months,
30 bucks a month buys you your own stand alone garage.

I work in Maricopa. I'm sure you can find a good deal on a rental house there and can ask a couple realtors for you that I work with. If you are driving back up towards the Phoenix area, realize that the 347 gets jammed up at least once a week with a massive accident and brings traffic to a stop practically.  In summer the dust storms can do the same.

A lot of people that live in Maricopa hate it.  The demographic is very widespread.  Utilities prices are insane. They just recently gave the interim police chief the full time gig and I think he will do a lot of good there. If you want more info, I can fill you in.  These are just the cliffnotes I basically tell everyone who asks.

Two more years and I'm out after my son graduates. Prepare for mushroom cloud dreams going up over the water and electric companies.

I live in the Tortosa Neighborhood, in a house we build thru Shea. and I really like our block, I know all my neighbors, and they are all very cool. I don't mind the drive/ride to work, but my wife hates it. Accidents on the 347 seem to come in spurts, you can go a couple months without it being a clusterfuck, then it will be closed two times in one day.

I like being out in the boonies, because I can see the stars, and it isn't as busy. Electricity/water is pretty pricey, but overall it isn't too bad. With the college going in down the road from me, they should be building more in the way of resteraunts and other stuff to support it.

They are building a big movie theater/bowling alley/whatnot on the res by the casino just south of town, so you wont have to drive as far to do one of those things in the fall.

I can second what most people say. My commute takes at least an hour to get in. I drive a Titan, so the gas mileage sucks, but the actual drive isnt bad. There are accidents that close the 347 down. But for the most part, they occur at Riggs Rd. When that happens, you just have to take the 10 a little farth south and then come across another road. There isnt any circumventing the highway though. BLM looks for people that do that and will go after themwith full excitement.

The utilitiy prices are terrible. Water and sewer for me starts at like $90. It will never be less, even if I dont use any water at all.

We have pretty much anything you will need to buy for every day use in town now. Ace, Wallys World, Bashas, Frys, Etc. Most of the fast food places are there now. If you like Mexican food, you will be very, very disappointed though. We even have a Radio Shack that sells ammo!

The demographic is absolutely widespread down there. Lots of different people from different walks of life. Rent is cheap. But then so are the houses. Most neighborhoods are pretty good as long as you stay in the newer homes. If youre looking on a street with half of the homes abandoned, it wouldnt be a nighborhood I would want to live on though. There are some around.

It is nice and quiet for the most part. Smells like cow shit most evenings. And some evenings it can get really bad. Not as of late though, interestingly enough. The best part is that there are some good places to go out shooting 5 mins from anywhere out there.

Thanks for all your input so far guys. What appealed to me right away about the area was the low rent prices. Learning a little bit more about the area however, I think I might be better off looking at the Chandler area. Factoring in fuel, utilities, and wasted time due to car accidents it sounds like I might end up paying less in another area, even if rent is higher. Also, I CCW a majority of the time so anything that is on the rez doesn't hold any appeal.

Thought would be you will regret the move. Stay in the valley, awesome stuff is easy to find. In my neighborhood (mill/university) rental HOMES with real yards and made with quality can be found for under $1000 easily. 10 minute drive max to the 202, 10, 143, 51, 17. Walking distance for anything fun isnt far away, or walk a touch longer and you've got the light rail. Oh, we have free buses too.

Edit: As my neighborhood is a stones throw from ASU the majority is full of quiet college kids (grad students) that rent, and the rest (for the most part) are professors and a few of us that are done with that learnin' stuff that own. Anyways with that said a 6 month agreement is pretty much the standard for rentals in this neck.

Good luck.

You could also consider the north end of Casa Grande. The I-10 is rarely a CF like the road out of Maricopa, our utility prices are fine, and you could easily rent a house for under a grand. Just stay north. The further north of Florence Blvd the better you are.

True story, and I knew that anything south of Florence was gonna be bad news. But I had close to 3 years living in Desert Sands to figure it out.

Naturally there will be plenty of those who slam the small town life. But having grown up in Los Angeles County, I personally find Casa Grande to be refreshing. Mileage might vary, though...
