| Anyone here anything about what is going on at Camelback Mountain? I'm in town and watching some helicopters circling around it. |

Quoted:
2, not 1, but count'em 2 dumbasses hiking in the dark and going off the trail, needing to be rescued to get down. I am NOT sure, but it looked like a teen boy and girl. They and any dumbasses like them should be billed for the cost of the rescue. I've never been up camelback, but would it really be that hard to get down if you wandered off the trail? I mean it's in the middle of the city, and just about every phone has a flashlight. |

Yeah, hiking down a big mountain with several cliffs and large drop-offs would be pretty hard with just a cell phone. If you are dumb enough to get stuck you are probably too dumb to pick your way down with a cell phone. I would just find a nice rock, and take a nap until the sun came up. |

It happens pretty often. Too often. The trails are not hard to follow, if someone goes off trail and requires rescue or assistance they should be the one to fund the rescue/search endeavor.
A sign in the parking area detailing an estimate of charges to be expected might be a good discouragement to these trailblazers. |

Every day, EVERY DAY, people get trapped on that mountain. I have the ability to see the Phoenix Fire Regional Dispatch system and you could literally, as a firefighter working at a station near the mountain, plan about what time you will get a call to do a mountain rescue.
I have never hiked that mountain so I don't know what the conditions are. But I can say it happens like clockwork. Most of the time they don't need air resources and it may take ONLY three engines, a squad or two and a battalion command. Huge drain on resources that could be responding elsewhere. |

So these people don't get fined or charged for their ignorance? If people were fined or charged for their ignorance, the fire departments would be raking in MILLIONS every year. Stupid shouldnt just hurt, it should cost money too. Im sure there are some very reasonable people that do get trapped on the mountain. Accidents do happen there, however it would be nice if there were stats to back up the claim that most mountain rescues are due to negligence. |

Negligence, however, should always be fined. |
