I was talking to a buddy and we decided on a whim to pick up some leftover tags for the Unit 33 HAM hunt. The problem is that since this is pretty last minute, I'm not going to have too much time to scout for good locations and I only have a weekend to hunt.
So I hurl myself at the mercy of my AZHTF brethren to pass along a few nuggets of wisdom. Has anyone hunted this unit for javelina? What have I gotten myself into? Did I just pay $28.75 to Game and Fish for a nifty sticker?
Any advice/tips are greatly appreciated and if I manage to send 240 grains of XTP through a javelina, you will be rewarded with copious pictures. |

I mostly hunt 33. I shot a Javelina a few years ago just north of Benson, IIRC I was on Mescal Rd. I've seen a lot of Javelina sign this year while quail hunting on the SE side of hwy 77.
Javelina like low ground, and use washes to move. Find the washes they are using and hunt there. Don't waste your time way up in the mountains. |

The area by the 77 is exactly where we were planning on going. |

i was just at these coordinates jan 13. more javelina tracks than you can shake a stick at. this is a slight wash on the right side of the rd that leads to water of the san pedro river. i was sight seeing just looking things over but there is not much "high" ground right here but lots lots of brush and trees. on the east side of the road the hills rise up a bit but the road itself cuts right through your shooting down from the hill. i was also going to consider climbing up in a tree near the water. its not a definite guarantee but if i were to look for javelina, this would be my choice. check it out and decide for yourself.
