Is there a gravel pit or anything like that a guy can go shooting around Mesa, maybe towards the Superstitions, or out east of Mesa?
I go to Rio Salado once in a while, but I'd like to find somewhere I can toss out some reactive targets & blast away!! Thanks! |
| Pretty much anywhere in the Tonto Nat. Forest save for the Lower Salt River area. I go out to Queen Valley occasionally. Lots of places to shoot out there. Just clean up afterwards as usual. Take RT 60 east to the QV turn-off. Go in about 2 miles and then turn off on FR357 (Hewett Station Rd.) continue about a mile. You'll see the shooting areas. |

The area I'm talking about is not at the berm with signs that say Government Property No Trespassing. There's a turnoff about a 1/4 mile down that takes you towards the dam. This area is National Forest on every map I've seen. The last time couple times, the deputies told me I was on State Trust land. Of course I had to have discussions on where the boundaries are located. The most recent encounter, the deputy didn't exactly know the boundaries and was told by his superior to tell us to leave. Apparently there were complaints. When asked about the complaints he didn't have any real answers. He mentioned something about ranchers and campers. I told him we had as much right to use the land as they did. Didn't matter either way as I had to pack up my shit and leave. I now have printed maps from different sources showing the boundaries. One map from the State Land Department and another from the US Forest Service. I also have a couple satellite photos of the area. Not sure if it'll prevent me from having to pack up and leave but at least I have something to back up my statements. |

Of course the sign that stated this was so shot to hell you would never know unless you had a friendly deputy point it out to you. I've learned to go farther off the beaten path and haven't had any other issues out there. Please pick up your trash and then some if you shoot out there. |

Thanks guys!! And yes..., I always pick up my trash after shooting. I never shoot glass, Just cans & pans! Actually one of my favorite homemade reactive targets to shoot at
is a simple 4" piece of a 4x4 which after all is said & done you're just sending 'em back to nature in pieces! For longer distance, I just paint 'em flo orange! The worst thing we can do is leave a mess...., that's why there are no longer very many places to shoot near my WA. home! |
