Anyone ever done this?
I'm looking at purchasing in another state and trucking it out here What is the tax associated with this to get plates for it? I thought it was something like if it has never been registered in AZ there is a tax or something. Anyone know the rate? I am looking at purchasing from a dealer Will |

With a bill of lading you wont have to pay sales tax where the vehicle came from. Arizona doesn't require any sort of sales tax on used vehicles unless is purchased from a in state motor vehicle resale establishment (dealer)
You will be required to take the vehicle down to a Arizona MVD office for inspection before being able to register it. (Out of state title inspection) You can print a temporary 3 day plate from here Service Arizona Hope this helps out. |

I got my truck in used in California, PCS to TX and took leave in AZ, returned my residency back to Arizona, registered the truck, no additional fees, think it was like 128 for 2 years or something. MUCH better than Cali's near $500 a year to register it.
No inspection or anything, I know it says it can be inspected, but they didn't. |

I'm getting conflicting info
Searching doesn't come up with anything really Some people say you pay tax at the dealer you buy it from and if AZ charges more tax you pay the difference, if not you pay nothing. Yet some people say they paid nothing Has anyone actually done the process before? Does anyone know what tax rate they would charge at DMV? Will |

last septmeber, a friend in va sold me a 97 civic for 500 bucks. the title was signed and notarized along with a bill of sale. 700 bucks and it was trucked out to me with a week.
went to dmv and WITH vehicle. it's a standard title transfer WITH THE EXCEPTION that they will take the out of state title and visually inspect the vehicle's vin tag. that is it. pay for new title transfer and tags. drive home. eta: my 05 mazda is due this month. it's 166.00 for one year. i'm guessing the vehicle license tax is based on age since it seems that the tax has dropped about 30 bucks a year. figure just the tax to be about 200 or so. what it's actually based on, i'm not sure. |

Will You will only pay the sales tax at the dealership if you physically cross state the state line and purchase it in person. Sounds like you are not doing that, correct? Are you doing the deal over the phone? Bill of lading from the trucking company will clear you from the tax. I work in the business and this is how its done ETA: The tax rate at the MVD would be determined by what city that MVD office was in. |

You can pay tax at the dealership and then when you register here you can get credited I believe. But that is most pointless. When I bought my car in Vegas, I simply signed a document for the state of Nevada saying I would register and pay tax on the vehicle down here. Then I drove it down here and registered and paid tax to the tune of $1,300. |

I signed a waiver on taxes in that state because I was registering it here. I also got a 15 day temp tag. |

This is what happened when I bought some vehicles last year as we slowly replaced our black vehicles with light colored ones..
I bought a new car from the dealership group I still do some contract work for back in Colorado. We were not charged sales tax in Colorado since we were going to register it here in Arizona. Once back here in Arizona we were charged state sales tax when we registered the car in Arizona. We paid no city sales tax but that was only because we live in unincorporated county. We then bought a used truck here in Arizona from a private individual and was not charged any type of sales tax because it was from a private individual. Finally, we bought a used car from an individual in Cailfornia and had it transported here. Again, we paid no sales since it was from a private individual. |

So my purchase from a dealer (in Virginia) will be over the phone (so no tax correct?)
I will not be accepting delivery there (completely over the phone) The vehicle will be loaded and trucked here to Az (thus a bill of lading form will be given) Then when I go to register it I am only responsible for the normal registration fees and plates (no Tax?) Is this going to be a pain in the ass process? Thanks |

Yep, you paid tax on the vehicle because it was NEW. Not used like the OP. Quoted:
It's not nearly as hard, as you'd think it would be. Get the car here. No tax should paid. Go to MVD, be prepared to wait a while, and they'll take care of the rest. The inspection is basically just a VIN check, and you're on your way. Don't sweat it. This. |

I believe you will still have to pay sales tax on a vehicle if the car is bought from a dealer. This is regardless of the vehicle being new or used.
The following was copied from the State of Arizona government web site concerning vehicle sales. If you purchase a vehicle from an out-of-state dealer or manufacturer, the Department of Transportation will require, at the time of vehicle registration, proof that tax was paid in the state of purchase and that the amount of state tax paid is equal to or greater than the applicable Arizona use tax rate. If tax was not paid in the state of purchase or was less than the Arizona use tax, the Department of Transportation will require that the use tax be paid at the time you register the vehicle. |

This thread is starting to make me ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() That would apply for new vehicles only. Like stated above the other 2 or 3 times. |
