I've had oreillys check my OBD computer.. they said the likely problem is a faulty o2 sensor. How do I make sure its not the catalytic converter?
I need this to get fixed soon in order so I can that damned emissions test so I can have my vehicle registration transferred to AZ. Vehicle is a 2003 Hyundai Elantra with a manual transmission. Does anyone know how I can make sure its the O2 sensor? Or otherwise have a recommendation for someone to isolate the problem? Posted Via AR15.Com Mobile |
| with an advanced OBD2 reader you can get an actuall numerical output reading from the o2 sensor depending on the output reading difference from the cold idle and warm idle you can better determine whats malfunctioning. if theres no change in the output reading between warm and cold idle id say its the catalytic converter if the reading is out of range or no reading at all id say its the o2 sensor. |

What was the code? If you can provide the number they gave you, it'll really help. This. Not knowing your car, I'll assume it has two O2 sensors. If the problem really is an O2 sensor, knowing the code could indicate which sensor is bad. Another option is to have your trouble code cleared, get emissions checked, and then deal with the O2 sensor later. I had a similar problem with my Chevy truck and did it this way. If you clear the code, drive your car around for a couple days BEFORE getting your car tested. Clearing the code will reset all the sensors and make them "not ready". The sensors should become "ready" after a couple days of driving. |

With the code # you would know if it were the upstream or down stream O2 sensor ,you have 2 . Also it it is a low cat effichancy code it is the cat. FYI use NGK or Bosch OEM O2 sensors that plug in with the right ends ,not universal O2 sensors. Oriely and Autozone are over priced ,check www.rockauto.com for the best price. |

Was the code P0420? If they didn't tell you what it was, go to autozone and have them scan it, they will give you a print out.
Also, do you get gas at QT? When I get gas there my CEL will come on showing p0420, but if I use Chevron or Circle K gas it will shut itself off and stay off. |

This is 'shade tree' mechanic advice, but if you can shake or kick the cat and it sounds like gravel is rattling around in it, then your cat is probably bad.
If it is throwing a code for an O2 sensor, it is cheaper and easier (generally) to replace that first. If you are burning oil both are going to go bad, usually the O2 sensor first. |
