I recently started a new business in Phoenix and purchased a home in Scottsdale. My primary rsidence is in NJ where I have a NJ Firearms Permit that allows me to buy as many long guns as my checkbook allows, and 1 handgun a month (pls don't get me started)  I am keeping my NJ drivers license and will not be converting it into an AZ drivers license.

Can I purchase long guns and/or handguns in AZ to be kept in the state of AZ with my NJ ID and DL?

Thanks....

Per federal law you cannot purchase handguns outside your state of residence.  Long-guns yes.  But a dealer has to abide by the laws of NJ as well as AZ.  It will be pretty hard to find a dealer willing to risk running afoul of some weird NJ law he doesn't know about.

You would be better to convert your residency to AZ.

Wouldn't it be legal for him to buy from private sellers for rifles only then? If that's the case then he should just do that. But for hand guns you are shit out of luck either way. If someone ever wanted to give you a gift of a firearm though that would be legal.

Just buy your handguns in NJ and bring them with you when you head out this way. If I were you I would rather sport an AZ drivers license anyway.

IT'S REAL easy you are a resident of both states NJ. AND ARIZONA . You can buy handguns in ARIZONA . All you need is a ARIZONA i.d. card from the dmv . My father lives in MARYLAND and ARIZONA half the year and he can buy handguns here in ARIZONA . AFTER AGE 65 THE ARIZONA I.D. IS FREE , HE IS 70 . HE ALSO HAS A ARIZONA CCW.  100% LEGAL AND NOT AN ISSUE!!!!!!!

IF YOU CAN SHOW WATER BILL ,ELECTRIC BILL WITH 90 DAYS PROOF OF RESIDENCE IT'S LEGAL TO BUY HANDGUNS .!! YOU OWN PROPERTY HERE YOUR GOOD TO GO !

You're missing one thing, he would not be a permanent resident.  Look up resident laws.  I looked into this when we moved wanting to keep residency in MN.  You cannot be a resident of two states was my understanding.

ETA:  I wouldn't F with purchasing laws and the ATF like this.  Specially given the current situation going on with the ATF and Arizona is involved.

From the MVD website http://www.azdot.gov/mvd/azwelcome.asp#ResidentDefinition
State law requires that you obtain an Arizona vehicle
registration and driver license, immediately if any of the following
applies. If you:

  • Are registered to vote in Arizona  –or–

  • Place children in school without paying the tuition rate of a nonresident  –or–

  • Have a business that has an office in Arizona, and that bases and operates vehicles in this state  –or–

I don't see the requirement for a resident to have 90 days proof of residency.  According to the above, that's for resident aliens.

ATF WEBSITE !: May a person (who is not an alien) who resides in one State and owns property in another State purchase a handgun in either State?

If a person maintains a home in 2 States and resides in both States for certain periods of the year, he or she may, during the period of time the person actually resides in a particular State, purchase a handgun in that State. [27 CFR 478.11]

Q: May aliens legally in the United States buy firearms?
An alien legally in the U.S. may acquire firearms if he has a State of residence. An alien has a State of residence only if he is residing in that State and has resided in a State continuously for at least 90 days prior to the purchase. An alien acquiring firearms from a licensee is required to prove both his identity, by presenting a government-issued photo identification, and his residency with substantiating documentation showing that he has resided in the State continuously for the 90-day period prior to the purchase. Examples of qualifying documentation to prove residency include: utility bills, lease agreements, credit card statements, and pay stubs from the purchaser’s place of employment, if such documents include residential addresses.

Q: What constitutes residency in a State?
The State of residence is the State in which an individual is present; the individual also must have an intention of making a home in that State. A member of the Armed Forces on active duty is a resident of the State in which his or her permanent duty station is located. If a member of the Armed Forces maintains a home in one State and the member’s permanent duty station is in a nearby State to which he or she commutes each day, then the member has two States of residence and may purchase a firearm in either the State where the duty station is located or the State where the home is maintained. An alien who is legally in the United States is considered to be a resident of a State only if the alien is residing in that State and has resided in that State continuously for a period of at least 90 days prior to the date of sale of the firearm. See also Item 5, “Sales to Aliens in the United States,” in the General Information section of this publication.

Ok.... So I own a home in NJ and AZ. I also own a busineses in both NJ and AZ. I own a car and have it registered in AZ but still have a NJ DL which I will not convert to a AZ DL due to insurance ramifications by my carrier in NJ.  I have a valid AZ automobile registration (valid state ID?) which notes my legal addy in AZ.

Both NJ and AZ have rules on the books that say if you own a biz in those states you need to maintain a DL in that state. Obviously I can have DL's in both states without breaking a Federal law.

Have I confused things enough?

I've been told by several larger dealers that I can buy new and used long guns with no problem. How about handguns? Class III?
