I went tonight for the first time and it was really fun and low key. Now I just need to adjust my setup for next time because I was pretty god awful slow. Lower power scope and higher cap magazines and I will do much better. |

Lower power scope and higher cap magazines and I will do much better. I hate missing this match, it is a blast. For all the new shooters, this match is very low key and easy going and great for 1st time competition shooters. The match directors are great guys and will walk you through the whole thing. I've got a 1x-4x and only use 1.5x for the close stuff and 4x for the long stuff. I tried 2x and found myself fishing for the targets. Know your zero or you'll be there all night. I use a 50 yard zero and it covers the majority of the targets. Luckily the 100 yard target is pretty large but you should know your hold over anyways. I use a Black Dog drum and don't have to do any reloads unless I miss a lot or it gets the death jam. The drum helps save time because you don't have to reload and prevents those plastic mags from hitting the concrete during reloads. Kelly's 10/22 must have been giving him some serious problems. One more tip, make sure your stuff works. The winner is usually the guy with the least amount of jams or the guy who could clear jams the fastest. |

It was very low key compared to some pistol and rifle comps I have shot in, perfect for people who are nervous about trying something like this out. I brought my buddy who is a very new shooter and it was perfect for him. He came and watched me shoot a handgun comp. once and I can see how that group of shooters with their $3000 race guns and super fast times could scare the heck out of someone who just purchased their first handgun. I brought my 10/22 with a scope I have had on it for years, 4.5-16x or something like that. The close target stage was pretty hard to get through quickly with 4x. I also can only get stock 10/22 10 round mags to run in my gun, so I had to switch between 5 of those during each stage. I will be hunting down some high cap mags for next time and make sure they run in my gun so I don't have to change mags so often. |
One of these days I gotta try one of these... I have a ruger 10/22 that could do dimes all day at 100 yds... of course I haven't cleaned it in 3+ years ... but runs like a champ. I have had to take apart the little drum mags a couple of times for jamming...

Come to the next match and you WILL win I think it's out to hockey-puck size (which are really fun to shoot BTW) until I clean it up. I also need good, high cap mags. Richard |
