If Im reading the laws correctly, if I gift a 9mm handgun to my son when he becomes 18 he is legally able to open carry it. Is this correct? The dang laws are so confusing.

That is correct, he can OC at 18.  The laws don't usually say what is permitted, just what is not.

Yep, parents bough me(with my money) a S&W M10 revolver from my co workers husband around 16, night before I turned 18 I got a nice Galco thumb-break and at 12:01am I stepped out the door to go exercise my new rights.  Also went with the ability to site A.R.S. and Federal law regarding carrying at 18 from memory including the numbers under which the laws are listed since I stayed up late every night the week before combing over the law so that I fully understood all there was to know about carry and self defense law instead of trusting someone elses interpretation.  That said I never had to repeat it to a police officer as I never had any problems, just friends who were curious about carrying.

Ya, a guy I used to know somewhat got off on OC'ing < 21 as a lot of LE aren't that familiar with the laws. He loved when they'd try to take his away only to be verbally abused for lack of knowledge.
