I've only ever hunted quail and dove... So I know the shotgun ammo limits, but have two questions about taking varmints (coyotes specifically):
- FMJ, softpoint, hollowpoint... Any no-go's? - Mag capacity limit for centerfire? Would hit the F&G website to read the law for myself but have to be up at midnite and am going to bed.... Thanks. |

You can use any centerfire you want for varmints, FMJ included, so long as it isn't "military issue" FMJ. However, being an ethical hunter, you'll want to stick to a good hunting bullet. For coyotes and the like, Hornady V-Max are good stuff. Really, any hunting round, be it softpoint etc, will be fine. As far as I know, there aren't any caliber limits on varmints. If you want to shoot a coyote with a .17HMR, and you're a good enough shot to make it work, go for it. Magazine capacity on a centerfire semi-auto is 5 in the mag, one in the pipe. That doesn't mean just load 5 in the mag and you're OK, it means you must make it physically impossible to put more than 5 rds in the mag. |

I've talked to the head of every valley Fish & Game office and each has said FMJ of any type is a violation. You need to post a name and a number because I can't make that question happen with anyone I talk to. Can't remember the guy's name, but he is/was xxxxxx, IIRC (deleted the info, not sure if Rizzo wants that out there, if so he can post it). Rizzo is the one who talked to him. Read the law yourself. FMJ is not illegal. Here's the text. R12-4-303 Unlawful Devices, Methods, and Ammunition A. In addition to the prohibitions prescribed in A.R.S. ยงยง 17-301 and 17-309, the following devices, methods, and ammunition are unlawful for taking any wildlife in this state. An individual shall not use or possess any of the following while taking wildlife: 1. Fully automatic firearms, including firearms capable of selective automatic fire; 2. Tracer, armor-piercing, or full-jacketed ammunition designed for military use; A .223 is not designed for military use. A FMJ in .223 would be legal. As would an FMJ in .243 or .270 or whatever. That's the regulation. Now, let's be honest with each other. The wardens in the field are the one's who are going to cite you for it. You may very well have to go to court (I kinda doubt it's ever happened), but you'd win unless you were shooting Lake City 5.56 or the like. |
