Where can I get scrap steel for cheap in the Phoenix area? Doesn't need to be anything fancy but I'd like it to hold up to .223 and .308 for a while and I don't want to spend much.

depends on how close range you are as to how thick it should be.   for mild steel i would start with 1"  thick at 100 yds and farther.   1" plate weights 40.84 lbs. per sq foot.   try the scrap yards.   they will  charge you by the lb.   i would guess  they will charge about .20 cents per pound.     scrap yard.

Smith pipe Glendale and others mostly stick to mild steel. Heflin is one of the last in town that cuts hard plate for the mine equipment. Bring all the safety gear Gloves goggles hard hat and ask if you could buy some drop from the plasma table. You may have to sort through some odd pieces till you find what you want.  Second choice Reliance or Smith Pipe and steel. for scrap Davis salvage is good too.
