Might be an odd question, but I figure I'll give it a shot.

Any Tempe residents go to church in Tempe? I'm a protestant, and grew up methodist. I didn't particularly like the atmosphere (would mix politics with religion, too liberal in general of interpretations of scripture, etc.) I didn't care for it. Then I joined a campus group that turned out to be rather cultish, and that scared me away from regular church attendance for over a year.

Anyway, I'm curious if anyone attends a protestant church in Tempe that might fit the bill a bit better. I don't want to hear about politics of any kind from the pulpit, but in particular, I don't want to hear about Obama.

If ASU students attend, that's a plus.

This is probably the worst place on earth to be asking for church advice, but hey, it's worth a shot.

Hey Couch C,

This is in Mesa.
I don't know if this is what you are looking for.....hard for me to tell, I'm a Jew.
But I am very good friends with the wife of the Associate Pastor (she's a local TV reporter - I used to be her assignment editor in another life).

Just pasing on the info.

Thanks guys. I'm open to most suggestions, and will look them up. I also intend to start asking around at school and see if anyone has any recommendations. Most of my friends don't attend church, so I haven't really looked into that much either.

I'm not in Tempe, but I know there is a First Congregatonal Church in Tempe.

I grew up attending a congregational church, and it was never political. For what it's worth.

Emmanuel Lutheran Church (WELS - Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod)  Conserative Lutheran Doctrine. You will not hear political discussion from the pulpit. You WILL hear God's Word and why we ALL need it.

Here is their web site:  Emmanuel Lutheran Church Look to the left side of the home page and you can click on all kinds of answers to your questions... what they teach, believe, etc.
They have close to 1000 members, but it is NOT a "mega church".

Very interesting. I like what I see in the outline of beliefs. I'll have to read more thoroughly and check it out.

They're actually experiencing a split. Allowing practicing gay ministers was apparently too much for some of their congregations.

Note to Non-Lutherans:
Not all Lutherans are the same; some are conservative and some aren't. Please don't judge us all as one. (Kind of like there are more than one kind of Baptists.)
