To make a long story short; I am considering moving the family to Douglas. I have two small children (8 and 9 year-old girls) and my wife is a school teacher. I carry constantly and my wife is learning gun handling and will eventually get her CHL so she can carry as well.

I am leary of the border troubles these days...can anyone offer opinions on what it is like down there?

Somewhat akin to a third world shytehole. Beautiful country really, but thoroughly Balkanized. You might want to visit and try it on for size yourself. I recommend the Gadsden Hotel for a look back at Douglas's grander past. Spend some time in Bisbee and Tombstone while you're at it. ¿Se habla Español? Good luck.

Why Douglas? There are many better options that don't include random border violence.

Douglas is reported as needing teachers badly...reading these posts I begin to see why!  Diana is a Sp. Ed. certified teacher w/ 15 years of teaching under her belt.

We want to try AZ, NM or NV because I love the area....but Beruit we don't need!

Douglas would be a really neat town if it weren't on the border.  I will visit it, but there is no way I could see living there.  You could live in Bisbee and commute to Douglas.

Don't do it.

I hunt near Douglas every year. When I drive into town for ice it's like being in the worst part of Mexico.

Avoid it like the plague.
Worked there for a week last month, couldn't wait to get the hell out.
And the "historic Gadsden" is a shit hole as well.

My grandparents still live down there, my parents grew up there. I like it but it's definitely seen better days. My grandmother was the mayor for a while in the 90's and since she left office and Borane took over it's just taken a gigantic nose dive. That town has definitely seen better days. It's beautiful outside of town though. There's a shooting range close by and it's a quick drive to the Chiricahua mountains. You'll want to keep Border Patrol on speed dial as you'll be using it. The Gadsden Hotel has seen better days too, but the basement is haunted so that's cool. It's close to Bisbee (full of hippy fruitcakes) and Tombstone (crazy commercialized but fun nonetheless) which are cool to visit. About 2 hours from Tucson, close to Sierra Vista/Ft. Huachuca.

If you've got any specific questions PM me, we have a lot of close ties to Douglas and I'm sure I can find the answers for you.

OK....I'm convinced. Douglas is a shithole. Since I don't want to be a once-a-week crime victim of the illegal aliens or have my daughters sold into white slavery by the cartels....screw Douglas!

Anyone know of any job markets for Elementary/Sp. Ed. teachers worth looking into in AZ?

I love the Douglas School District.  Meet Ken Cormier and you will see why.  My wrestling team was in the Douglas Invite for 10 straight years.  80% of the kids are Hispanic and you will have some Gang Members.  But, you will have a bunch of nice kids.  The Gonzales family will be one of the most athletic you will ever meet. (One of them is a Marine in A=Stan today)
Several of my freinds live in Bisbee and drive to Douglas. (20 minutes on a bad day)  One other lives in S Vista and drives. (40 minutes).
The Head of the Sierra Vista Schools Maint. Team lives in Douglas and drives here every day. (Anglo fellow)
Shooting clubs in Douglas, Bisbee, Sierra Vista, Ft. Huachuca, Tombstone.
Cochise County folks tend to stick together regardless of which burg you live in.

Douglas is a nice tight nit community. Good people but... dead in options to do ANYTHING. I live in Nogales and it has more options than Douglas. Try Rio Rico or even Nogales if available. Plus, you're gonna be in a community of Patrol Agents, Customs Officers, Sheriffs Deputies, Nogales Police Department and much much more... Plenty of guns and action

The Douglas School District is haed and shoulders better than the Nogales District.  Your wife will be in very good hands and prpbably love her kids.
You can spend every day on a range.
Nogales keeps voting in Raul Grijalva and is FULL of libs.
Take Douglas, then look around the area for a year or so.
If you were a H S athlete they need coaches at the H S and they are very competative.

Good...your children would have known discrimination and racisim the likes of which you could only imagine. As for your wife, there are plenty of opportunities in the state with someone of her qualifications. Look to the east valley - or even Tucson if you prefer southern AZ. Come check it out.

I've lived here (outskirts) since 1990 when then feds transfered me here until my retirement in 98' we choose to stay here Lady steel is still on the job here.

This is a good community.small town does have it politics.  Very good school system that lacks good strong teachers. Currently teachers tend to come and go here fairly quickly,as do superintendents. This town is hard on them. For your children you want to move into the Stevenson school zone. As a matter of fact Stevenson needs a 1st and 2nd grade teacher for upcoming 10/11

Not a lot of activities in the way of big resturants, movie theaters etc. Unless your comfortable crossing over into Agua Prieta then there is many resturants,a great cinema complex, a casino and other activities. Or you can drive to Sierra Vista or Tucson for entertainment or Costco sams club shopping.

For your kids you can keep them busy in AYSO soccor, base ball, Girl Scouts, Karate, Dance. We also have 2 gyms here

This is Geronimo,Wyatt Earp,Indian war country lots of history to explore and  plenty of hunting to do also.

Great gunstore here "All Safe" Lyn Karchner is one hell of a gun smith Engineer and Nam vet. Shooting range is within 5 minutes of town, special shoots every sunday. Always looking for new active members.

We have Safeway,Food City and a Super WalMart plus several quaint downtown shops.Napa,Auto Zone Checkers, and a Chevy dealership.

Best Western just opened a brand new hotel here

Not a high crime rate here but we do have our share of issues with gangs, drugs (transportation),tweeks, human trafficing etc. Per capita we have a large LEO community DOC BP/ICE/Customs.ATF/ Marshals/FBI mostly covert for these 3,  City police and SO.

Housing is good here plenty to offer the renter or buyer. We have a decent golf course and a community college that offers a great aviation and nursing programs.

Bisbee is more Hippy/alternate lifestyle granola bowl living   Their school system has many problems Myself (I have good friends that live in Bisbee) I would not put my children into that environment.

It'll definately be different, but all new adventures start with a step forward come on down and check things out.

do they still throw beer bottles and rocks at the opposing team?

No, the admin at Douglas especially the A D has really clamped down.  In fact if you eat at the Pizza Hut after the game often Douglas athletes will join you and be pety darn friendly.
I personally took my teams to the Burger King at Bisbee because coaches eat free.

Check out Douglas before you move there.
If you don't speak Spanish, you will need to learn it if you want to fit in.
If the pay is good, fine work in Douglas, but don't live there.
There are several decent small towns to live in southern Arizona that are within an easy commute.

The last time I worked there was in the mid 90's, I went to the Taco Bell for dinner.
You could see the border fence when seated in the lobby.
For every taco I ate, I noticed three people pushing thru the chain link fence from the south.
