I (I + my family) are  making a last minute trip to Phoenix for the weekend and will be getting in tonight from Minneapolis. Mostly were going to Phoenix because it is not -10 and it would be nice to see the sun again. That said, I'm also looking for fun things to do or interesting places to eat. What are some interesting things to do or some good places to eat? I really like mexican food and anything spicy, are there some good local places to find some food like that? Ill be staying at the residence inn by the airport so things close to there are extra good

The Phoenix Zoo and the Botanical Gardens are pretty close to the airport, and so is the AZ Science Center. I live up in northern AZ but I know those are a few of our favorite places to go as a family when we visit the Valley. The Phoenix Suns also play just a little ways from you, and they have home games on Friday and Monday. As for mexican food - dude, it's everywhere!

In your area find a Macayo mexican restaurant.  You could go to Bill Johnson's Big Apple on Indian School as it is one of the 'old' Phoenix family cowboy places.  You are very close to the Arizona Mills mall and the Claim Jumper Restaurant.

For out of towners who like spicy Mexican I usually take them to Arriba Mexican grill.

Here is my list....

1) Bring a gun and shoot the Sunday morning match at Rio Salado in Mesa
2) Eat at Arriba's or Los Dos Molinos
3) Head south of the airport and hike South Mountain
4) Get a beer at Four Peaks Brewery in Tempe

Bring 3 guns and shoot the Saturday morning multigun match at Rio salado

On Saturday night eat at Rustler's Rooste (on South Mountain, SW of the I10/Baseline intersection). Its a great informal place with character, good food and live music. It also has a great view of the valley, and you can watch the planes flying into Sky Harbor airport.

Go for a hike on South Mountain - it is one giant park (the biggest city park in the US). There is nothing finer to do in AZ than hiking in the Sonoran Desert.

PHX zoo is okay. I had a better time hiking around the parks around PHX zoo every morning after work then the zoo itself though.

Rio salado range is cool.

I'll second Los Dos Molinos (no pun intended) and add Carlsbad Tavern...with a "T"...not too far from the aeropuerto in Scottsdale.
