My wife went in today to buy a S&W M&P 9c from the only gun store in southern AZ that said they had any in stock.  When she went in to see the firearm, she asked the guy working the counter to see the weapon, he rolled his eyes, looked her up and down, and reluctantly retrieved the weapon for her.  When she asked about a few features of the pistol, he pretty much snubbed her and looked at and treated her like a child who shouldn't be looking at guns.  Dont know what their reputation is around these parts, but defintely a negative experience and said firearm is being ordered and they sure as hell aren't getting the FFL transfer fees.

Any good salesperson would have been all over any woman trying to impress her with his manly knowledge of firearms. Not to mention flirting a little.

I never miss the opportunity to smile and be helpful to any woman. Especially when a lady is asking for my help. Only an idiot would blow the chance to be a hero.

He may have been intimidated by her asking questions he really didn't know how to answer.

In any case....major fail.

I don't blame you, but it shouldn't be that way. There's no reason a woman, obviously looking to purchase, shouldn't be treated like a valued customer.  That being said, I've been treated like a leprous red headed step son in gun shops where I've bought several guns in the last few weeks.  Seems like more of a gun store thing than a woman thing.

Older Women Are So Reasonable!

AFTER  BEING MARRIED FOR 44 YEARS, I TOOK A CAREFUL LOOK AT MY WIFE ONE DAY AND  SAID, "FORTY-FOUR YEARS AGO WE HAD A CHEAP APARTMENT, A CHEAP CAR, SLEPT ON A SOFA BED AND WATCHED A 10-INCH BLACK AND WHITE TV, BUT I GOT TO SLEEP EVERY NIGHT WITH A HOT 25-YEAR-OLD GIRL".

NOW I HAVE A $1,500,000.00 HOME, A  $45,000.00 CAR, NICE BIG BED AND PLASMA SCREEN TV, BUT I'M SLEEPING WITH A  69-YEAR-OLD WOMAN. IT SEEMS TO ME THAT YOU'RE NOT HOLDING UP YOUR SIDE OF THINGS.'

MY WIFE IS A VERY REASONABLE WOMAN. SHE TOLD ME TO GO OUT AND FIND A HOT 25-YEAR-OLD GIRL AND SHE WOULD MAKE SURE THAT I WOULD ONCE AGAIN BE LIVING IN A CHEAP APARTMENT, DRIVING A CHEAP CAR, SLEEPING ON A SOFA BED AND WATCHING A 10-INCH BLACK AND WHITE TV.

AREN'T  OLDER WOMEN GREAT? THEY REALLY KNOW HOW TO SOLVE YOUR MID-LIFE  CRISES.

Cant really say I agree with you on this point.  My wife knows her way around a gun and certainly a gun store.  She knew what she wanted and if she was treated halfway decent she probably would have walked out of that store about $800 lighter after firearm, holster, and ammo.  I would have gone with her to the store if Uncle Sugar didnt think I needed to be in class.

Murphys is a great shop, on numerous occasions I have watched them run off a bunch of gang bangers and people trying to do some straw deals. they have a huge customer base and lots of loyal customers. And I have seen them deal with lots of people in a very professional manner, but I can tell you they will not take shit from anyone or kiss your ass so you buy a $800  gun and accesories. If you want your ass kissed and a bunch of people that don't know anything about firearms try Scottsdale gun club the lady at walmart knows more about what she is selling then they do.

1. Murphy's has been in business for an eon, and easily does a million in business per year. This is no joke.

2. The salesmen have mostly been there for years, there are a couple of new guys, but they're unfailingly polite. The old guard can come across as gruff sometimes.

3. I've seen single women in there, and they've been treated well, and been given good advice.

That being said, they've been selling an average of 50 firearms PER DAY since Nov 5th, mostly handguns (only because they didn't have any stock of semi-auto rifles until recently). They are TIRED of the rush, believe it or not. It would not entirely surprise me if this particular customer just rubbed someone the wrong way, at the wrong time. Things like that do happen, even to the most even-tempered person. I do have my suspicions about who she dealt with though; longtime employee, a good guy, but he really, REALLY needs a vacation.
Lest anyone call me a Murphy's cheerleader, I've had bad service there by Murphy himself. He was having a really bad day, and I happened to be the straw that broke the camel's back. His attitude has improved dramatically now that Murphy's is no longer in the gunsmithing business (other than repairing their own guns under warranty).

Home of the $75 box of Winchester White Box .380!

Other than that, an OK shop, although most of their prices are a tad bit high for new, and used from them is around 25% higher than Murphy's for the most part. But nobody really can beat Murphy's on used guns.

That being said, I have bought from them: an RRA lower on Nov. 4th, and a late 60's - early 70's vintage Armalite AR-7 still in the original box.

And Murphy's provides that level of service, IMO.

That being said, I've seen some real idiot customers over the years that can strain anyone's reserves of patience. One in particular stands out when West of the Pecos was still in business. The guy is looking at a the pistols in the display case, and loudly asks (with a distinct attitude) "Do you have to pay tax on used guns?"

"Yes sir, that's required by the state of Arizona."

The nitwit doesn't like that answer, and leaves in a huff, and the salesman and I are shaking our heads in wonder at the question, and his reaction to the answer.

Actually, I think he has been at his current location since around 1988.  He's been in business longer than that.  Previouly at Campbell along the river.  He's been in business longer than most other shops in this town.  Look at all the gun shops in town and tell me which ones have been around longer (shops with the same owners).

Three things about Murphy's stand out though.  1) His shop seems to have more foot traffic others in town 2) he has firearms in stock and 3) his prices are pretty reasonable especially compared to other shops in Tucson.

The biggest complaint I have with them is their lack of parking.

When Murphy was on Campbell and the River he was a delightful fellow ready to talk and an extremly competant smith.
I bought 2 nice 1911's he had assembled from Essex and Caspian parts with Ed Brown and Wilson innards.  I still have one of them and it is an ace.
I rarely go in the Ft. Lowell store, I just don't feel welcome.  But, they sometimes have components others don't have so I do check once or twice a year.

It used to be a small, friendly shop.
Now, It's real simple, they don't make you feel welcome and act like you are bothering them.  Kind of a "good old boy" shop where unless you're on the "A" list you're dirt.
I spend my money elsewhere and urge others to do the same when the subject comes up.

People watching in a gunshop is fun I have seen some crazy shit, once a couple could have gotten a domestic violence at the cashier the woman was pissed the guy was buying a pistol when they didn't pay the rent yet, she shoved him he yelled at her and pushed her back and they did this all the way into the parking lot and drove away yelling at each other. This was not at Murphy's but it was in Tucson and he did leave with the pistol and ammo

I spent 10 years in retail and know it can be a pain dealing with the public, but the BIGGEST problem was customers who had been lied to and bull shitted to in the past at other shops as they distrust everything you told them.   Most of the time in retail you do noy have mutliple visits with a given customer to develop a relationship, neither of you have the time.  So an aggresive sales person WILL make more sales that a passive nice guy, just plain fact.   That aggressive prick will drive away customers too unfortunately.  I worked in an electronics store (hi-fi stuff mostly) and it was 30 years ago, but I remember good and bad salses service from both sides of the counter.

Gun shops seem to be staffed with a particular kind of arrogant prick, and there seems to be at least one of these big-mouth-know-it-all-idiots in every gun shop.   The more YOU know the soonner you spot him.  Vote with your dollars, take you business elsewhere.  If you have the time let the shop owner know with a very breif letter.   I wonder what percentage of failed retail businesses are due to poor customer service?  I bet it is WAY higher than people suspect.   I have had poor service even at my favorite gun shop once in a while.

Most of my other experiences there have been bad, though.

I also don't like their "no multiple 'assault weapons' policy".

This apparently started to happen right after Arizona Sportsman closed; this were apparently willing to sell multiple AW's to anyone that could pass a background check. I do hope that Second Amendment doesn't have that same policy.

The policy, FWIW, probably doesn't apply to long-term, "known good" customers, not that I have the cash to buy multiple 1k rifles at the same time.

They were really nice and their ammo was reasonable (13.99-15.99 /box of 50 for FMJ).  The guy who helped me was a younger guy wearing a maroon polo.
