My parents have some ammo that I need to have shipped from Glendale to Denver.  Does anyone have any ideas or can help arrange shipping of 4 .30 cal cans of ammo??  I'd appreciate it very much.

Just mark the containers "ORM-D" and ship them. Loaded ammo is not hazmat, only raw powder and primers ship hazmat.

Pack them in a good double box, download a copy of a ORM-D sticker and take it to a UPS Service Center.
But be warned that if you do not have a UPS account, the prices are double or triple for an individual.
The last two shipments I did were around $1.50 a pound.

Been hiding in Denver working for Uncle Sugar and Nappy (<–– unfortunately).  I only get to make it out here every now and then anymore and a close friend of mine is getting married ... *TODAY*.

I tell ya' what, I'm starting to like the snow more and more compared to 100+ degree temps!!

Anyhow, as far as the ammo shipping goes, does it matter if they're just in .30 cal cans or do they gotta be boxed up special?  I'm planning on getting this stuff shipped out to Colorado this weekend so I can help take down some of the  prarie dog population!!

Shipping ammo can be a pain in the ass.  You have to take it to the main UPS depot, the satelite UPS places will freak out when they here "ammo" as if you were asking to ship gallon cans of gasoline with lit road flares taped to them.  I tried to send my Son (in Michigan) a few boxes of 9mm ammo for his birthday last fall and it was just easier to order more ammo from AIM Surplus and have it shipped to him.    But if you are persistient ship it.  I would overbox the ammo cans just to not draw unwanted attention since ammo is like gold these days.

I took a shipment to the UPS Store at 83rd Ave and Bell. No freak outs there.

ORM-D is a DOT hazard class.  Small arms ammunition is a hazardous materal and is subject to the HAZMAT regulations in 49 CFR.  A lot of people mistakenly think that ORM-D is not HAZMAT because HAZMAT charges are not usually assessed for such shipments.  Reclassing certain materials as ORM-D, when allowed by the regulation, excepts the shipper from many of the marking, labeling and shipping paper requirements in the regulation.  There are still other parts that must be followed.

Here are the DOT regulations for shipping small arms ammunition:

Code of Federal Regulations, Title 49, Part 173

173.63 Packaging exceptions

    (b) Cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices.  (1) Cartridges, small arms and cartridges power devices (which are used to project fastening devices) which have been classed as a Division 1.4S explosive may be reclassed, offered for transportation, and transported as ORM-D material when packaged in accordance with paragraph (b)(2) of this section; such transportation is excepted from the requirements of subparts E (Labeling) and F (Placarding) of part 172 of this subchapter.  Cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices that may be shipped as ORM-D material is limited to:

(i)Ammunition for rifle, pistol, or shotgun;
(ii)Ammunition with inert projectiles or blank ammunition;
(iii)Ammunition having no tear gas, incendiary, or detonating explosive projectiles;
(iv)Ammunition not exceeding 12.7 mm (50 caliber or 0.5 inch) for rifle or pistol, cartridges or 8 gauge for shotshells; and
(v)Cartridges power devices which are used to project fastening devices.

(2)Packaging for cartridges, small arms, and cartridges power devices as ORM-D material must be as follows:
(i)Ammunition must be packed in inside boxes, or in partitions which fit snugly in the outside packaging, or in metal clips;
(ii)Primers must be protected from accidental initiation;
(iii)Inside boxes, partitions or metal clips must be packed in securely-closed strong outside packagings;
(iv)Maximum gross weight is limited to 30 Kg (66 pounds) per package; and
(v)Cartridges, power devices which are used to project fastening devices and 22 caliber rim-fire cartridges may be packaged loose in strong outside packagings.

Part 172 (Marking)

172.316Packagings containing material classed as ORM-D

(a)Each non-bulk packaging containing a material classed as ORM-D must be marked on at least one side or end with the ORM-D designation immediately following or below the proper shipping name of the material (Cartridges, Small Arms).  The ORM designation must be placed within a rectangle that is approximately 6.3 mm (0.25 inches) larger on each side than the designation.

(b)The marking ORM-D is the certification by the person offering the packaging for transportation that the material is properly described, classed, packaged, marked and labeled (when appropriate) and in proper condition for transportation according to the applicable regulations of this subchapter.
